Re: Thailand fuel/pump prices
Re subsidies for fuel in Thailand. As far as I remember, fuel costs from the refinery are basically the same. Just that the administrations tried to promote certain fuels over others, thus distorting the retail prices through differing tax rates and oil fund contributions for certain types of fuel. ...

Re: Thai law prohibits foreigners from driving passengers.
BB, the Bangkok Post is basically an English language newspaper for Thais, mostly written by Thais. Hence, some rather pathetic editing of what I would assume a piece written by rather junior staff. That said, I had to go back to the article to read it in it's entirety. They are targeting foreigners...

Re: Thai law prohibits foreigners from driving passengers.
There is a list of restricted jobs that foreigners are not allowed to do. This list has been there for donkey's years. More to discourage the Indian guys on a tourist visa selling peanuts on the street, but lately many foreigners seem to be jumping on the bandwagon selling things like kebabs and the...

Re: Selfie obsession in Thailand a cause for concern
The selfie thing, however, does sometimes work in your favour. I looked up the surname, daughter's name and region. She had posted a short video with her dad in it, recognised him, and was having a chat with him later in the evening.

Re: Selfie obsession in Thailand a cause for concern
I do occasionally use FB, if only to find people I've lost touch with. Recently found a work colleague (from 30 years ago) through his daughter's FB account. He doesn't have any, and at 88 didn't see the need for one.

Re: Selfie obsession in Thailand a cause for concern
Apparently TikTok 'çontent creators' get monetary returns for making such idiotic stuff.. A little bird told me.. Many supplementing their meager income by posting daily and getting around 2-300 baht per day..

Re: Long weekend escape Thailand getaway ideas
You might consider Langkawi Island, fairly easy access from Thailand, different from Phuket. Never been, though someone I know went years ago. Only went to Tioman for fishing, but that was a lifetime ago..

Re: Has Lax Thai Policing Ever Helped You Out?
A lot of it depends on time of day, what they are looking for, what you are driving and where you're coming from. If I'm going drinking outside, I don't drive. If I'm driving,I won't drink. The car dashboard has a little red blinking light to remind you to buckle up. If you get stopped in the city l...

Re: Post Cataract Operation Care
Pete, I delayed my initial surgery as the surgeon mentioned they would have been upgrading their equipment back then. They were getting a robotic type to replace their over 10 year old thingamajig and he said it would be much more accurate. I did look it up, and there are several advantages for simp...

Re: Post Cataract Operation Care
BB I've just had my second procedure done mid-January. Basic advice is, keep water away from the eye. Nothing really said about alcohol or coffee, but I did abstain for a couple of days. The incision does take a while to heal, so any exertion is to be avoided. Included in the post-care notes (Thai l...

Re: Soi Fire Extinguishers
Given what Hua Hin used to be like (lots of wooden structures back in the day) it probably made a lot more sense. I think my first trip driving down from Bangkok must have been late 1992-3, I stayed at the Melia (now known as the Hilton, and the shophouses were mainly wood back then.

Re: Soi Fire Extinguishers
Interesting, only just noticed the blue label. Fairly messy to clean up dry powder, though quite effective for most fires. I think BCF/ Halon was being slowly phased out because of the CFC issue. Perhaps you can call the number on the front and ask them?

Re: Soi Fire Extinguishers
A red fire extinguisher is typically water-based, so only good for wood or paper fires. Cannot be used for oil based (like a kitchen fire) or electrical (fuse box short or similar) type of fire. The size also indicates it will be operable for a minute or so. My guess is the tessabahn is trying to sp...

Re: Smart phones, not so smart operators
While I do pander to online banking, I'm old school in many respects. I'll still use an ATM card at the ATM, pay by cash or credit card at the supermarket, and prefer not to scan random QR codes for online payments. Though in the past few days have seen two older people using their smartphone at the...
