On the three wheeler thing - the old trikes with one wheel at the front and two at the back where not as stable as the two wheels at the front configuration (like SCORPIAN) the other problem with having two wheels at the back is you needed to take care not to run over your own feet on take off!!

For use on the beach a two wheel drive would be fine. You do need to make sure the tyres are nice and chunky so as to avoid wheel spin. I use a HAWK model on the beach regularly and its fine!
