The comments made on this thread on the subject of patriotism can be summed up thus.
"I am patriotic and there is nothing wrong with that. It's just other people being patriotic that's bad."
I still consider that patriotism is an absolutely abominable attitude..and solipsism too!

Re: Has patriotism in Thailand gone too far?
I would not say that, "Patriotism in Thailand has gone too far, as such a statement presupposes that patriotism in other places has NOT gone too far. Dr Johnson is credited with the observation that, "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel." If he did, indeed, say that he was, u...

Re: On-line English dictionary
Like the original poster I have been using dictionary.com for some time, for both work and pleasure. I have it bookmarked. But having seen this thread I have had a look at alternatives and have now settled for Oxford.

Re: Bookship drops anchor in Bangkok
Having been housebound and recovering from an accident, I was looking forward to my last visit to "Logos Hope" a year or so ago. I had read almost everything on my bookshelves and was armed with a lengthy book-list. I returned disappointed and empty-handed. What is not mentioned in the pub...

Re: British Pension Direct to Thai Bank
I was interested to see what rate of exchange the OP (Bernard) would have been getting having his UK state pension transferred direct to his Thai bank account - but I then learned that he has opted to have his pension paid into a UK bank account, I am about to apply for a UK state pension but, havin...

Re: Best 3 places to eat in Hua Hin
My favourite three places for Thai food. 1. Seaside - as already mentioned. 2. You Yen. Along the road that runs north from the clocktower between Petchkasem and the sea, and which comes to a dead end at Klai Kangwon Palace. Not cheap but a wonderful seaside ambience. 3. Place by the sea at Khao Tao...

Re: To open and run a school
Whilst I agree that an English teaching certificate that is sufficient for a work permit application can be quickly obtained, I have yet to meeet a holder of such a certificate who cinsidered that the course was easy. Anyway, the example given by the previous poster does not appear to be part of the...

Re: To open and run a school
To get back to the question raised by the original poster, if I am permitted to do by the administrators of this forum, I would refer the prospective school owner to www.ajarn.com - where a comprehensive search should present answers to most, if not all, of the questions. In reply to the previous po...

Re: Whats happening tomorrow saturday 28 Road closed
The May Day celebration has nothing whatsoever to do with 'communist insurgents'. The Labour Day holiday has been celebrated globally since 1891. The date was chosen to commemorate those who lost their lives in Chicago in 1886, when workers demonstrated to support their claim for an eight-hour worki...

Re: 300 baht wage to be imposed no matter what...apparently
I really believe that in Thailand in 2012 all workers deserve at least 6600 baht per month whatever they are doing and wherever they are working. Rather than close down or move elsewhere, an employer with a large workforce should be able to save on the wage bill by cutting down on dividends, directo...

Re: Is there a way of telling a Thai they are a liar?
The westerner who is able to speak, read and write Thai is not, in my experience, a particular rarity. Calling someone a liar, in any language, is not a good basis for mutual understanding. It is, however, sometimes justified. For example, when Bob Dylan responded to the shout of 'Judas' on his tour...

Re: Guitar Setup
I would ask any musician playing regularly in Hua Hin if they could recommend anywhere in town. If not you might have to come to Bangkok. I had a good set-up job at Alicia Guitars -367/1, Soi 11, Rama 9. 02 716 9186 - 02 716 8806. This place is not so easy to find and is a few kilometres out from th...

This passing farang who can read Thai translates it as:
"LEFT TURN PERMITTED AT ALL TIMES - BUT BE CAREFUL OF TRAFFIC APPROACHING FROM YOUR RIGHT".

ProBike on Soi Sarasin - the soi that runs along the northern edge of Lumpini Park - carry a comprehensive stock of spare parts and they are not inordinately expensive.

Re: Hua Hin Jazz Festival 2011
With the dates now announced as (Friday) July 8th and (Saturday) July 9th I was wondering whether the change of month may have anything to do with the tides. I have just had a look at the tide tables and note that high tide on 8th July is at 22.09, while on 9th July high tide will take place at 22.1...
