Re: Biggest Benefit to Being Expat

C.m Looks like you're fairly new to all this. Enjoy your holiday, but don't wait too long to go back to Europe. Unless you're on an expat company package (and from the sound of the above post you're not) there is not a lot that can be achieved in Thailand for someone as young as you. Yes, I am readi...

Re: Need to know things about thai GF

Oakdale..

If she is still married to someone else very dangerous to touch. Divorced lady, fine. Lax gun controls and BIB who tend to look the other way, plus the amount of 'suicides' that happen, you don't really want to qualify as another statistic.

And, yes, don't ever let anyone move in.

Re: Thailand Calendar

I'm with BB on this, and am staying indoors for the duration. Songkran used to be a nice, polite Northern custom until revellers and holidaymakers started the mayhem. They used to put flower petals and jasmine essence in the water, and used a small silver cup to pour water through cupped hands, not ...

Re: Hua Hin police to get tough on motorbike helmets

Any rider, pillion or otherwise, is supposed/expected to wear a helmet. C.m, don't know where you get the idea that only the 'driver' is supposed to wear the helmet? Perhaps this assumption comes from taking the motorcycle taxis: 1. people (pillion) are too lazy to use one 2. they don't want to use ...

Re: Rubber snakes

Rubber snakes don't deter mynahs. They've built a nest on the ledge above where I've hung the snake. And the snake isn't just 20 baht, cost me a lot more, the small ones are useless. But it did come already pre-strung with clear nylon fishing line, so I'm assuming the locals find them useful. I boug...

Re: Which Mobile Phone?

Haha. And here I was, thinking it would have four wheels.. Many other rugged smartphones on the market, CAT comes to mind. Don't think too many of us would really want that amount of bulk in the pocket for day-to-day use. I've ditched my 5" Acer phone and got the Sony Xperia Z3 compact (4.6" screen)...

Re: Land boundary markers

My take on it. (Based on the wife getting the family plot surveyed late last year). 1. Get the Land Office to do it. Officially. They will have a queue. Just wait your turn. 2. A land surveyor doing it on his day off is not official. Even though he may work there. 3. As per 2., a land surveyor using...

Re: Thai law on property rights and marriage

i had a copy of the regs back then, purchased from a lawyer's office in Silom. Think I lost it in the last great flood of 2011. Baically, Sin sod - dowry Sin son tua - personal property before marriage. This is yours, and needs to be declared before you tie the knot. It remains so after marriage and...

Re: New to the Forum

You'll read a lot of gripes on the forum from members, I'm sure you know that's what expat forums are like, take most with a pinch of salt. :) 404CJ, Not all are gripes.. Thing is, human nature is such that the good things seldom find their way into the public arena.. Will have been here as PR 30 y...

Re: NHS treatment back in the UK if resident in HH?

My appendix decided to burst when we were visiting... I don't think I'd be here now if I had had to go to a government hospital here. VS On a slight tangent here, but healthcare nonetheless. The government hospitals here can be a bit hit or miss, but you do get good and timely medical treatment. Ta...

Re: Possible land purchase 2.5km outside HH centre. Planning to build houses. Advice please.

OBR My younger brother tried what you are proposing to do, also around the same age group and still single. It didn't work out. If you're not retired, and can't show an income source locally (rent from abroad doesn't count) you're under the radar and will eventually end up in the authorities' sights...

Re: Hello all. Newbie in Manchester.

Hi Bobby Some advice.. From someone who's been here around thirty years. Don't take it to heart, but rather with a large pinch of salt.. 1. Don't burn bridges. Keep your property, don't sell up. Not at your age. 2. Enjoy the GFE while it lasts. (girl friend experience) 3. As another poster advised, ...

Re: Chrome plating

Good Sunday morning. A few comments, if I may... I used to work at a facility where we did aviation standard nickel plating on aero engine parts, the biggest obstacle to getting a good job done was always the part preparation. Extremely strong acids were used on superalloys to remove all traces of o...
