Re: The wild story behind Lonely Planet's first Thailand guidebook
I first encountered "Southeast Asia on a Shoestring" in 1978. I was in the infamous "Pudding Shop" in Istanbul looking for passengers to travel to Delhi (and subsequently to Kathmandu) in my minibus and a Japanese guy who joined us had a copy. It's not easy to recall in this age ...

I'm at Swampy. Just passed through Immigration and was pleased to see they are not using those awful finger print machines - photo only.

Re: Photo Trip Report: Riding Across Nepal
Todays photos are really good, very enjoyable thank you Yesterday you mentioned a stop in Tansen, I stayed there on my first night in Nepal after driving up from the Indian plains. I remember being impressed, not by the accommodation but just how different it felt to India. I walked up the hill in t...

Re: Photo Trip Report: Nepal
Thanks for edition one. I spent a few months in Nepal some years ago (drove there from UK) and have some very fond memories of the Kingdom. Looking forward to the next episodes

Re: Bars in or near City
El Murphy's and Limelight both shut tight yesterday afternoon although there are still places you get a beer in this area but it's fairly ghostly. Father Teds was open with extend happy hours. Locals are all scared stiff and rumours abound so I will refrain from spreading them here but I think a deg...

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
I saw a Chinese group in town last night, first I've seen for a while. Approximately 40 of them leaving a massage shop and following a leader carrying a flag, in single file, towards the night market. Almost all wearing face masks. The white Coach that dropped them off at the Station just had the wo...

Re: Thailand eVisa website problem
Re UK / London e-visa website. If you do manage to navigate to the end of this tedious system you are asked to either make an appointment date to visit in person or to post documents/passport to London Embassy. If everything, including payment eventually works you get a confirmation and bar code - i...

Yes, Use Prachuap Khiri Khan.
If this is the system for London Embassy it is a very slow and tedious system

Re: Hua Hin to Kuala Lumpur (KL) by Rail
Hmm, bit of a wait at Padang Besar Station which is a dump but better than being stressed about missing your connection. The size and speed of the queue at Passport control is always unpredictable. I was impressed by the ETS trains, particularly after stepping off the Thai train - I believe there is...

Re: Hua Hin to Kuala Lumpur (KL) by Rail
I think if you search for the ETS Trains instead of KTM you will find details for the much more comfortable express trains from Padang Besar to KL. There were changes last year, ETS may no longer go to Butterworth but almost certainly goes to KL. KTM Commuter trains go to Butterworth new station. so...

Re: Last Overland - Landrover journey through Thailand
What a fantastic vehicle; Series 1 1955 had a very sweet 2 litre petrol engine. I did a trip from UK to Morocco in one of those years ago - it was good. Only problem really was fuel starvation when the petrol pump mounted on the bulkhead overheated during the heat of the day. I don't know if this on...

Cool Breeze on Naresdamri, down by the Fishing Piers, last two - three years has been very good, also does a great and very reasonably priced Boxing Day cold turkey with Bubble & Squeak
