Re: Anyone for flu shots?
I used to get a flu shot every year. I got one last year and immediately got the worst case of flu I've ever had. I know, I know. You can't get the flu from a flu shot. However, it was awful enough that I won't repeat the mistake. My sister and both parents have experienced the same thing: A bad cas...

Re: House Buying Method.
I spent most of my adult life on the island of Saipan in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The Commonwealth has land ownership restrictions that are very similar to those of Thailand. Of course, the lawyers dreamed up all sorts of methods by which foreigners could "purchase"...

Re: The demise of small shops
I think that there will always be room for local shopping, but if the Mom and Pop shops want to survive they're going to need to learn to change with the times. I live in the outskirts of Korat not far from what passes for a high street. I used to do quite a bit of shopping a the local stores, but t...

Re: House Buying Method.
My wife is an attorney. A big part of her business is straightening out farang property cock-ups. You would be astounded (perhaps not) at the amazing and foolish things people do.
By all means get an attorney and insist on being told all the potential drawbacks of each and every option.

Re: New Visa run to Myanmar
There is a post by "George" on that other forum which states:
I don't need to do visa runs, but I'm wondering if this might become an interesting day trip.Singkhon is a full international border point from Wednesday. We have got that confirmed by Prachuap Khirikhan Immigration.

Re: Which PC/Laptop?
My wife bought a MacBook Air about a year or so ago. It was expensive, but it's a real gem. If I were in the market for a laptop, that's what I'd buy. At work she uses an external monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Re: How much water do you need?
I learned the 'urine color' test back when I was running marathons and wanted to monitor my rehydration progress. I don't run those distances anymore (gotta save those knees!), but I still drink enough water so that my pee runs clear at least once a day. I think it's an easy and reliable test. Drink...

Re: When was your first visit to Hua Hin?
It was the late 80s when a friend of mine (the late Dan Hughes) introduced me to Hua Hin. We were both living on Saipan at the time and visited Hua Hin together many times over the years. Perhaps the most memorable visit was the time we decided to cycle from Hua Hin to Pala U. (I'm sure some of you ...

Re: Credit Card from a Thai bank
We did this primarily because we couldn't buy airline tickets on-line using a Kasikorn virtual card. I'm curious. Did you try and it didn't work, or did you avoid trying because you knew you'd have no physical card to show at checkin? I had quite an adventure with EVA Airlines and their credit card...

Re: Credit Card from a Thai bank
If you have an account with Kasikorn you can get an online payment account. This works like a debit card, but you get all the numbers you need (credit card number, verification code and expiration date) to make online purchases. But, there is no physical card. I've used it with no problems for onlin...

Re: TV series worth downloading
Two miniseries mysteries:
Top of the Lake, filmed in New Zealand and starring Elisabth Moss of Mad Men. Good plot with beautiful scenery.
Broadchurch, filmed in Dorset. Again, nicely written with some lovely coastal scenery.

Re: Money transfer for condo purchase
Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but the topic is the same.... I'm still a bit confused about this whole process. I am about to buy a condo in Cha Am. I need to make a substantial down payment now, with the balance due on completion. I previously transferred a large sum from the US (HSBC) t...

Re: Greetings from Isaan
Yes, I live in Korat. Been here eight years now. My wife's family is from here, so when I retired we decided to settle close by. My wife has her own law office in Korat and is not quite ready to retire, so we'll keep this as our residence for a while and consider Hua Hin/Cha Am as an occasional geta...

Re: Greetings from Isaan
After making regular visits over the past two decades I pretty much know where I want to be.
I won't be moving permanently for a while, so I'll probably opt for a condo.
I miss the beach....
