Re: Buying a Car

Or you can just deposit the 800K in a bank and receive a one-year retirement extension from your local immigration office.

Re: Thai Food Terms Application

I find this Android application helpful as it has photos and categories (e.g. appetizers, drink, mains, and fruits) and more comprehensible menu descriptions than any 'bi-lingual' menu I have seen (albeit less howlers)

Re: Sickness - Thai wife/UK husband

In the middle of life plans comes bad news. Once the medical prognosis is firmer and immigration questions answered it may be time to have a sit down and think through together where best to spend the rest of the time you have left. My wife is adamant that she could cope with a seriously ill spouse ...

Re: Pros and Cons of Colonization

A bit farther afield than Viet Nam and Cambodia, but not so far as Finland lies Taiwan which was occupied/colonized by Japan for ~50-years (compared to the Pacific Coast of Russia [~40-years], Korea [~35-years], and mainland China [<15-years]). On a visit to Taiwan in May I noted relatively little r...

Re: 80 foreigners arrested in nationwide crackdown on schools and teachers

The only problem with Thai DL for ID is that the 5-year validity does not correspond to the passport expriration so the passport # will be out of sync much of the time. I carry a copy of the current passport together with emergency notification #s and contacts as well as health insurance cards and D...

Re: Which car would you feel safest in Thailand

I would second the recommendation for the Honda 7-seat CRV. Haven't looked but their smaller BRV does a good job of folding the two rear rows of seat down f;at to allow loading of larger purchases. We live up-country and have one of the orphan Chevrolet Spins - bought it for its seven-seat configura...

Re: Smartphone screen replacement

You might check Lazada to see if they have a cost of glass screen/digitizer (typically sold together) or only the complete screen/lcd. Just replaced my wife's Samsung tablet screen/digitizer for ~300 baht using a Chinese screen and instructions on the internet with the help of my stepson (who had dr...

Re: OA Visa - 3 questions

A multiple-entry O-A is valid for multiple entries of up to one-year each for the first year. So if you re-enter close to the visa expiration date you will be stamped in for another year. You will need a re-entry permit should you need to travel in and of Thailand during your second year. You can ex...

Re: Adobe Pro

Many people 'lost' Adobe Acrobat as Adobe seems to delight in 'breaking' earlier versions of their software when OS changes - for me I lost 9.0 Pro when Windows 10 did their anniversary upgrade and I am sure when I get back to Thailand I will have lost my copy of Acrobat 8.0 Standard. Even after dil...

Re: Electric whirly bird roof vent

I generally believe that a solar installation is more complicated (requiring panel, battery storage for evening use, charge controller) than is warranted for a simple fan controlled by a thermostat. I would be happy to wire up a fan and set it to run off of a timer or thermostat if I could be certai...

Re: Electric whirly bird roof vent

SCG offers a 'system' that incorporates an electric rooftop vent, but when I inquired they would not sell the vent fan as a separate item even though we were going to buy our tiles from them. The 'ballpark' quote I received for a 'system' including solar panel, controllers and such was 90,000 baht. ...

Oops - the Security Council foolishly dropped Canada and included USSR (now Russia), which probably gave the Thais qualms.

Re: Sv: Re: Borderjump

Sweden =15-days but Italy = 30-days. And the logic behind this is? TIT? The Group of Seven is a self-appointed group of significant economies who began meeting in 1985 to coordinate policies - members are U.S. Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. Why the Thai chose this group to extend an...

Re: Borderjump

Depends on your passport. Group of Seven and Malaysian passport holders get 30-days at land borders, others get 15 no matter how wealthy a country, e.g.Sweden =15-days but Italy = 30-days.
