I guess I always figured I was living in the land of Luddites.
Oh, well.

Re: Payment By QR Code - Why not more popular?
A bank card is probably one of least secure payment methods around.

Re: Payment By QR Code - Why not more popular?
It will be interesting to see what payment methods end up prevailing in Thailand. The QR system is so easy to use. If a vendor wants to accept QR payment all they need to do is post a printout of their Prompt Pay QR code. The customer scans, enters the payment amount and shows the completed transact...

Payment By QR Code - Why not more popular?
Payment by QR code has been around for a while now, but I rarely see anyone use it; Thai or Farang. I use it whenever available, mainly because it means that I don't always have to replenish my supply of small notes in deference to those vendors who look at a 1000 baht bill as if it were a piece of ...

บางควาย vs บางไทรย้อย - Bang Kwai vs Bang Sai Yoi
The barista at a coffee shop I frequent insists that the correct name for the fishing village just south of the Regent Hotel is บางควาย (Bang Kwai). But, if you enter บางควาย into Google Maps it always takes you to บางไทรย้อย (Bang Sai Yoi). To add to the confusion, the Tesco Express in that area is...

Re: Official Statement from BKK Bank in NY for US Fund Transfers
Interesting. I received no such letter, but for at least a decade I have been doing periodic transfers from a US HSBC account to Bangkok Bank Thailand via their branch in New York. The last one I did was in June: 13 Jun 2019 09:10 International Transfer nnn, nnn.nn nnn,nnn.nn. User So, is this going ...

Hong Kong Express - Odd Online Booking Experience
My daughter lives on Saipan where I spent 26 years. I plan to visit later this year. It used to be easy to travel between Bangkok and Saipan. Northwest had a particularly convenient and reasonable connection via Tokyo: US$750 rt Business Class including a free overnight stay, including meals, at the...

Re: How can Thailand curb its appalling road fatality rate?
Does anyone know why Thai traffic police insist on using checkpoints instead of patrol cars to enforce traffic laws? I grew up in California and we always drove with the knowledge that a police or Highway Patrol officer might be watching. A couple of years back I returned to California upon my fathe...

Re: Why do many expats not bother to learn to read?
I would never ask for water by just saying นำ้. I’m always a complete sentence guy and I always use a polite particle at the end. And, if I walk into a shop I always say สวัสดีครับ to prepare them for the horrible pronunciation to come. It doesn’t seem to work. I usually use something like ไม่ทราบว่...

AD Condo is the huge development just northwest of Ban Thew Lom.
Paradise Corner was in North Cha Am at the very north end where the road forks.

Re: Why do many expats not bother to learn to read?
The last couple of posts sum up why many expats don’t try to learn to speak the language - try as hard as they can and still have difficulty being understood!! It’s been enormously frustrating for me. I have worked so hard and spent so much money and still it’s a bust. And, it’s not only being unde...
