I have not seen conditions like now in Bangkok at this time of year. It is almost like a winters day in places where there is a winter! Not much wind, just depressing black overcast and steady drizzle. :?

Rainstorm pummels Bangkok, topples bus stop roof

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... -stop-roof

The roof of a busy bus stop in front of the headquarters of PTT Plc on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road collapsed in a rainstorm on Friday night. No-one was reported hurt.

Video showed the roof of the bus stop tilting and then crashing down beside a bus that had stopped to disgorge passengers, who rushed towards the shelter of the roof to escape the driving rain.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported flooding in Bang Phlad, Bang Sue, Dusit, Chatuchak, Laksi, Bang Khen, Phaya Thai and Din Daeng districts, causing heavy traffic congestion. Large crowds of commuters also flocked into electric train systems.

The City Hall said flooding remained on Phahon Yothin Road between Kasetsart and Sena intersections and on Ratchadaphesek Road between Ratchayothin and Ratchada Lat Phrao intersections at about 10pm.

The Meteorological Department predicted more rainstorms in the North, the East and the Central Plains - including greater Bangkok - in the next 24 hours.

More rain in Bangkok today, although it has cleared up now. Too early for the SW Monsoon to start, should be another 3 or 4 weeks before it swings around. There is a lot of confluence of mixed airflow, particularly in the Andaman Sea.
The Inter Tropic Convergent Zone is also quite pronounced, which maybe why we are seeing unseasonal weather.

At least it is a bit cooler!

A tornado trying to form over the Rayong area. Strange weather indeed. The rainy season has started over this side, and there sure weren't many days of high heat this year. Fine for me, much rather have it cooler and wet than hot and dry. Pete

Agreed on the cooler temperatures this year, but in Hua Hin, although only 33C, yesterday was one of the most uncomfortable days I've known here.

The synoptic charts are showing a strong southerly airflow drawn by an extensive low pressure area in southern China.

Historically the SW Monsoon is not considered to be established until it builds up in India. That date is usually around the first of June, and the prediction this year is inline with that. Kerala on the west side of India is where it is strongest. But there can and should be a strong SW flow in the Andaman Sea extending into Burma and Thailand for about a week before that happens.

The earliest the Monsoon arrived in India in recent years was quote:

"As per the records, the earliest arrival of Monsoon was on May 18, 2004, while the latest arrival was on June 18, 1972. Out of 47 years, there has been 20 years when Monsoon arrived on June 1 or before wherein in 10 years saw Monsoon reaching even before May 26. - See more at: https://www.skymetweather.com/content/w ... -in-kerala"

Whatever, I think that we have seen the last of high temperatures for this year. :thumb:

Yeah. Was at golf yesterday and I treated myself to a cart and was lucky I did.
The humidity was off the scale.

The southerly airflow is right off the sea, so it is carrying a lot of moisture.

^ Agreed. It's been raining hard where I am ever since that mini-torndao pic taken at 0700, and you can cut the air with a knife it's so humid outside. Gone, for now, are the nice cooling breezes from the north that would follow a rain storm a month ago. :( Pete

Pointing it at my daughter who freaked out when she saw it on the way to school. She's the one who took the pic while I was driving. She's never seen something like that "live" before. :D Pete

Wet weekend across nation, storms hit upcountry

Published: 11/05/2018 at 03:09 PM
Online news: https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

Thailand is facing a wet weekend, with rain forecast in most parts of the country.

The Meteorological Department said on Friday the outlook is for rain, sometimes very heavy, in some areas of all regions throughout the weekend and into Monday, when it will ease off.

There's more than a 50% chance of rain wherever you live in Bangkok and vicinity.

Some provinces were battered by summer storms on Thursday night, brought by unpredictable weather conditions.

Muang district in Khon Kaen was one of the hardest hit. Strong winds followed by heavy rainfall in the municipality brought down 10 electricity poles, damaging some houses and leaving more than 400 households in the dark at Ban Nong Yai.

Gusty winds in Chiang Rai also dropped eight electricity poles in Muang district and damaged two vehicles.

In Nakhon Sawan, a downpour and strong winds ravaged Muang district for more than two hours, causing damage to 15 houses at Ban Nong Rong, one of the storm centres.

No injuries were reported in the three provinces, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said.
