In 1994 I was offered a job as resident manager in a hotel in Pattaya which brought me to Thailand. Job never materialized but I decided to stay in Thailand for a holiday as long as my savings would last. I managed to escape from Pattaya and choose Hua Hin because friends who had visited it during a holiday recommended it. I also found out that the money I brought to cover the first one or two months without salary lasted quite a while in those days if you live quasi local style. I rented my first Thai home for 1,100 baht per month.

Hi Roel - an interesting survey. Early days with it I know but already showing a marked increase in first visits in the years since 2001 - which seems to reflect growth in housing and the newer influx of younger HH expats.
Particularly as the 2001-2005 option is a much smaller time frame than your earlier options of 9 year periods.
As with all surveys though I think we need to take into account other factors such as age of expats. Those who settled in HH before 1990 for example have only submitted 3 votes so far. Maybe reflects the older ones in the community who perhaps don't have easy access to computers, or don't use them at all?
It will be interesting to see how it goes a few days down the line

1st visit to Hua Hin was in 2005, previous two years had been to Ao Nang/Koh Lanta, Phuket, Phi Phi Island and then my GF at the time suggested we spend a holiday in Hua Hin.

Had a great time there and got to meet some good people on that trip. Next year we went to Koh Samui and at the end of that holiday my GF was off back to Ireland, so I decided that I would have an extra 10 days in Hua Hin before returning.

Had an excellent time and this time got to meet a few of the HHAD members. It was a great trip, but have not been able to get back since. But all being well I will be booking a trip for the end of April/May to Chiang Mai and then down again to Hua Hin.

I love Phuket and Samui, but must admit Hua Hin is a great place to chill out for a week or so at the end of a holiday. There is enough to to to keep you amused during the evening, and by the time going home comes, you do feel like you have had a holiday.

First visit in 1993 for a few days holiday with wife, daughter and a few of their family from Bangkok.
We all stayed at the Royal Garden Resort (Marriot).
Spent a lot of the time driving around the countryside and loved it.
Been back many times since and intend to retire there soon.

May 2003; planning to retire and move to Thailand in 2004, we came on a month long trip in 2003 to take a look at several towns that were on our list of prospects including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, and Hua Hin. We decided we liked Hua Hin the best so we came back here in early 2004 and bought a piece of land. Four months later I retired and we returned and and started building the house.

First visit was our honeymoon in 2001. Became a regular visitor with wife's brother-in-law running 2 popular pub/restaurants in Hua Hin in the early 2000's (Rockestra Cafe 1 & 2), and we liked to chill-out there. Since, relocated from Singapore to Bangkok and bought a weekender in Cha-am. Although Rockestra is no longer in business, we visit each month to play golf and relax "far from the worries" & chaos of Bangkok.

First trip to Hua Hin

Post by Governor »

Came for the first time in 1998 as part of a backpackers type tour of Thailand, stayed in a guest house near what is now The Hilton, cannot remember the name though I have trawled the area looking for it.

Remember a group of us walking south along the beach which was deserted and then getting a taxi back from out in the sticks.

Never thought I would have returned, though sadly it didn't work out, just wish that I had invested in property back then - who knows?

Passed through in 1982 with a motorbyke from Singapore to Bangkok. At that time it was the only road from south to north through HH and CHA.

Working for SRT and I got to see much of Thailand between Ratchaburi and Chumpon, Ban Pachi and Nakhorn Ratchasima + Ban Pachi and Pitsanulok + a lot of the rest!

Fell in love withe the Country and Hua Hin was No 1 on my venues.

Stayed many times in the Royal Garden Resort (Now Marriott), Melia (Now Hilton), Sofitel and too many guest houses that I can remember.

When finally moving here in Jan 2000 Mrs. T had a choice of location - Chantaburi, Bangkok or Hua Hin - Hua Hin won it by a mile.

Nov. 1986

i was heading south originally but the rain and flooding where really bad in Surat Thani so i thought i would head back North.

I arrived by train in the middle of the night and took a Samlor to Sofitel...it was'nt nearly so expensive in those days.

After I had a much needed clean up in a 'Proper' bathroom and a couple of days rest i moved to a Guest House.

Been every year except one since!

My experiences are similar to that, just a year earlier in '97.
