Did the same thing back in June, was very careful (well I thought I was) going into the sea, then bang, went A*se over tit on one of the buggers, my feet and shins were cut to shreds, i quickly got up and was more worried if anyone saw me, very sore for a few days but not as bad as UT

Maybe I am just stupid, but the rocks can be easily seen at high and low tide, there are signs about not swimming next to them. The beach gets a bad press yet I find it to be quite stunning (when the sun shines), the water is clear and seems to therefore be clean, the jellyfish are unfortunate but that is nature. My only complaint now is that the horsey folk seem to be a lazier in picking up the horse droppings on the beach. Maybe they should get their arses kicked. The beach on the other side on monkey mount is quieter, but darker sand and quite narrow, though still quite pleasant.

There are a lot of rocks near the Hilton that vanish completely beneath the surf at high tide, making it appear that the nearest rocks are a long way away.

More importantly though, as I and others have found, is that you can get sucked into the rocks and have great difficulty getting away again.

When I come to HH I sit on the beach most days in a spot close to the Hilton. I don't go into the sea very often, only when really hot or in urgent need of hydration ejection.
I tend to carefully look where the worst semi-hidden rocks are at low tide so I can enter the sea without straight after going to Bangkok hospital. However, it is not easy cos the under current can drag you onto a small barnacle strewn rock and you are soon grazed.
For sure I have grazed myself more than once, those Barnacles are very very sharp, so apart from the Horse sh*t, sewerage, dangerous rocks, Jelly Fish its OK, maybe that's why I once asked on HHAD how much the Hilton charge for sitting by their pool. :)

I honestly can't understand the logic. Why not walk 50 yards down the beach and eliminate at least one of the hazards?

We have always swum in the sea opposite the Hilton, as we just like to plop in the water from one of the beach bars whenever we need to cool off, but it is a b***r trying to avoid the rocks. :cuss:

Is it any better in front of the Sofitel?

One of the reasons we are coming back to HH for the third time is that it is only a 10 minute walk to the beach. When we get there, the beach bars have wall to wall umbrellas, so we can enjoy the sea, the warmth, the beer, a swim, the food, a swim, the beer, a swim ..... without getting frizzled to a cinder.

When we first came, I think most of the beach bars were in front of the Hilton, but I think there are now some south of Danmoern kasem road?

There is a nice stretch of beach with umbrellas and restaurants/bars in Takiab just south of the mountain and the (Takiab) fishing port. I haven't heard of the rock problem there, but you still always have to watch out for jellyfish here too.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Artilery, the bars south side are the same ones from in front of the Hilton. They are granted a slot in front of the Sofitel for a few weeks only at xmas/ new year. They will soon be moving back.

That area was featured on one of our Facebook reports recently https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 718&type=1

Thanks for the replies and the link to Khao Takiab report.
Can you get a regular tuk tuk to Takiab, or do you have to hire a private one? If so, about how much from the clock tower? It looks a nice location and fun to walk around the fishing port before going on the beach.

interesting to read Guru's comments about the Sofitel bars. That is why I have only seen them on some visits to HH. Any idea if there are rocks on that part of the beach? Perhaps the bars take them with them

My masochistic tendencies again got the better of me recently, I went into the sea where I thought there were no rocks, but I stood on a small barnacle invested rock, which made me lose my footing.
The waves were strong and I was being knocked under the water, whilst not in serious danger I had lost control of my movements, just as I was finding my feet, bang! and knocked sideways again, head under the water, graizing my hand and wrist on another sharp rock.
I think when it is not windy with big waves there is not so much a problem.
Why do I keep going there, cos I'm Ting Tong?
The beach vendor takes care mak mak, even the staff brush the sand from my toes and sunbed, only in Thailand. :-)

You better be careful Gus. Weren't you the one who had a cut last year that took forever to heal due to a bad infection? Barnacle cuts are nothing to fool with concerning infection. Get it looked at would be a good idea. Be careful out there everyone! Pete
