Improving Hua Hin.

Ticket double parking on congested roads. But that would require a gigantic shift away from the "me, me, me" mentality.
Not going to happen.
To their credit Thais don't blast their horns, give the finger or pull out a .38 (well, sometimes).

I would like to see at least two pedestrian bridges across the Petchkasem road

There used to be more pedestrian bridges across Petchkasem years ago but they took them down. There was one near Chat Chai market that was removed about 5 or 6 years ago. I think I have some old photos of downtown that will show it. I'll see if I can find them.

Must have been at least 8 years ago, HHF. I moved to Hua Hin in March 2006 and it wasn't there then. At least, I don't think so!

I don't remember any bridges but if I was going to site two new ones the location would be Market Village or between there and the new Blu Port development and one closed to the night market soi77.

The only one I recall was the bridge near the market. I think I was the only person to use it even then (c2000-2003). I was surprised to see it had gone!

I think Hua Hin suffers mostly by not having a road that goes along side the beach. Pretty much every other place I can think of has a road next to the beach, but in Hua Hin the closest road to the main beach is the Petkaseam Highway! Even if there was a will to improve the facilities; I'm not really sure how you could go about it??

I don't think that will ever happen - too many influential private owners have beachfront land.

I couldn't find any photos of the actual crosswalks. I think there were two but I can't see another one in the photos below so maybe the other one I was thinking about is/was the one out near Hua Hin Hospital. Anyway as I am not 10 meters tall and cannot fly a helicopter the photos below made in 2005 should prove the existence of the one in front of the Chat Chai market. I think it was removed when the front of the market was later renovated. The photos are of the north and south views of Phetakasem road made from the center of the crosswalk.

Oh, and look how horrible the mid day traffic was back then... and how difficult it was to find curbside parking on Phetkasem road!

Ok found it using the magnify function. This is the crosswalk in front of the market I believe. The magnified section of the elephant polo parade was made in August 2005 and at that point the crosswalk was alive and well, and I believe even covered from the sun with an advertising banner.

The 4 photos are the two original pictures followed by a cropped magnified section showing the crosswalk.

It occurred to me after looking at the first crop (2nd photo below) that the crosswalk may have been removed by a truck similar to the one with the blue stuff stacked up in back!

I remember the bridge well and also how little use it had. So little there was not even a resident beggar. Lots of improvements are possible but to get any implemented is like trying to get the same done for traffic laws. Just back from Chiang Mai and up there they fine both rider and passenger when they set up a helmet checkpoint. Unfortunately just like here the locals know the locations and only get caught by their own stupidity.

Yes, mainly for the school I would think.

I've used it quite a bit, but the only other users I've seen on it have been families spending the night under the stars. I've never ever encountered another pedestrian on the bridge.

HHfarang I like your photos a lot less of an issue crossing the road in the old days.

With Hua Hin's ever increasing developments you kinda wonder how the infrastructure will cope as something's are already under load for example-

Water ( or lack of it through out the year) the further south you go out of town.

Roads the week end traffic is just crazy we were in a friends truck and from Market Village to the Centara took about 40 Minuits you could have walked it quicker and stopped for a beer.

Does the planning department take issues like these into account or is it just about making the rich richer with the very powerful land owners and they of course will get looked after too.

Hua Hin needs to improve road safety and could do a lot more to make it more safe for pedestrians walking from the Sport Villa then past Market Village into town many holes and broken paving slabs not to mention the evening street venders that use all of the pavement so you then have to pass them walking in the road.

I don't think there's any point in asking for regulations regarding safety, infrastructure and development, otherwise it will just turn into any Western style town. We left behind our places of birth to have a carefree life, without all that regulation and the expense that goes with it
