Ran into a Youtube celebrity at Market Village today.
Ran into a Youtube celebrity at Market Village today.
I saw JC from youtube’s retirecheapjc in a icecream line at Market Village about 2:30 PM, he has his back to me as I approach him to say hello, I tap him on his shoulder….. he freaks out, “I don’t know you, what’s your problem”. He seems like a nice dude in his videos. There must be something making him paranoid of farangs?

I have no idea who you're talking about, but I'd be more concerned about the tapper than the tappee...
This is the way

I agree. I just went to YouTube and watched some of his videos, not exactly a famous person but just because you have watched this guys videos and he seems very friendly maybe when he is off camera he keeps to himself. Public vs personal life are two completely different things.dtaai-maai wrote:I have no idea who you're talking about, but I'd be more concerned about the tapper than the tappee...

Re: Ran into a Youtube celebrity at Market Village today.
Who the hell would enjoy some muppet come and approach them out of the blue and start 'tapping' him/her on the shoulder?
So he makes a few Youtube videos (never heard of him myself - the word celebrity is used more and more loosely as time goes on it appears) and you think you can now just tap him on the shoulder and start conversation... while he's queuing up for ice-cream?
Is it just me or are people getting more and more ridiculous.

I'm going to support Deep Blue here. If JC (whoever he may be) has posted loads of videos on YouTube to promote himself and his ideas, then he should be chuffed that a fan has recognised him. If he doesn't want recognition (which I think he probably does), then he should have just done vids with a voice-over, instead of showing his face.
I'll bet his viewing figures have gone up since this posting.

I haven't heard of him either but I was only recently reading about some miserable looking pet cat that has apparently made millions on Youtube so perhaps he could become a miserable retiree and become a hit that way.huahin4ever wrote:Famous??? Haven't heard about this guy! What is he supposed to be famous for?

Not from me they haven't, though it did occur to me that that might be the object of this odd little exercise.Vital Spark wrote: I'll bet his viewing figures have gone up since this posting.
Deep Blue may even have been tapping himself on the shoulder...

Just because someone posts a video, doesn't warrant them being harassed by strangers. I've know idea who said person is, nor do I care. What I do care about is strangers approaching people without permission. I could understand if said person was a singer, movie star or footballer - ya gonna be asked for photos/autographs. It's collateral damage of the job. This person is none of the above.Vital Spark wrote:I'm going to support Deep Blue here. I agree. If all of Hua Hin Forum's finest took a look at his video, it would have definitely knocked it up 11... maybe 12, views. He/She must be laughing all the way to the bank.I'll bet his viewing figures have gone up since this posting

I would think there are two main motivations to doing YouTube videos, especially a series (yes I peeked).
One would be for money, the other for the "fame". In his case, and I only looked at the screen shots, not the videos, he featured himself very prominently.
Never been one for autographs, or approaching public figures, and we see a lot here in Southern California, but by doing what this person is doing, I would think that being approached comes with the job.

The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.

He has 16,000 subscribers and gets up to 50,000 views a video. If you came to Thailand before the internet or when America was still colonies, you wouldn't know him. It’s a great resource for considering out of the way Thai cities to visit or live.GLCQuantum wrote:Just because someone posts a video, doesn't warrant them being harassed by strangers. You peaked my curiosity and I had to look up one of the videos. He pronounces Hua Hin as a very clear "Whoa Hin". I wonder how many complaints (or compliments) he gotten about that. Pete

This is for those who can't distinguish between approaching and touching a perfect stranger.
George Clooney first gained attention on a long running, highly rated TV show. After that he's done films. When asked about how movie fans and TV fans differed, he said the movie fans were somewhat in awe while the TV fans wanted to touch him. Such TV fans are considered lower than WalMart shoppers, complete wastes of food, oxygen and space. They make the rest of the human race look bad to other species.
There is one redeeming feature of fans who think fandom permits them to touch (which, technically, in the US is Assault) the object of their affection. When the star has security people, the fan is given a free, quick, one way trip to the ground, which is usually captured on video.

I agree on every point here. Celebrity culture irritates the hell out of me, but it doesn't matter about the level of 'fame'. If you're putting yourself out in the public eye, you should expect to be recognised.migrant wrote:I would think there are two main motivations to doing YouTube videos, especially a series (yes I peeked).

People saying 'You would expect it if you were very famous for this, but not if you're mildly famous for that' are putting their own arbitrary boundaries on what constitutes 'fame' and dictating how they personally believe people should act based on this preconception.

You can just imagine that scenario playing out in Thailand well...
Youtube Superstar: I'd like to report an assault.
Policeman: Ok, please tell me what happened.
Youtube Superstar: Some madman tapped me on the shoulder.
Policeman: Go away.
