Farang deaths in Hua Hin
Farang deaths in Hua Hin
I am told that on the local english language news on tv there were reports of two faring deaths last week.
Yet again, nothing on the Forum. Is this not considered news for those of us who live here ?

If you have a reliable and official news source then why not post the stories yourself?
We (as moderators) can only provide what we read ourselves in the news, however there is nothing stopping anyone else posting news if they have official sources (this is a community forum after all). We try to keep rumour to a minimum to prevent the propagation of slander which is why we ask for official sources when posting news.
Note: Facebook pages and visa forums are not official news sources.

Re: Farang deaths in Hua Hin
Just had a quick web search and this rather morbid site looks like it could be a good source: http://www.farang-deaths.com/
Indeed, the latest one is in Hua Hin:
A sudden loss of consciousness overcame an elderly Swedish man in Prachuap Khiri Khan province today, causing him to drown.
The incident happened in the swimming pool of the foreigner’s residence, located on 100/295 Soi in Bo Fai Village in Hua Hin district. Officers of Hua Hin Police Station and rescue workers found the man, identified as Kirk Jonsson, 61, without any clothes in the swimming pool behind his house. Medical staff estimated Mr Jonsson had been dead for about one hour prior to their arrival.

Many suspicious deaths in Thailand and they always seem to be men. 60 year old man drowns in chest high swimming pool? Body goes to Bangkok to solve every falang mystery death.
Re: Farang deaths in Hua Hin
Not brain surgery considering the demographic of expats in Thailand and the numbers of retired males against lady expats. The majority of lady expats are here with their 'farang' husbands and lead a totally different lifestyle to the male 'retirees' who are usually single and 'getting on a bit!' Their reasons for being here are totally different to the female expats here.TicTac wrote:Many suspicious deaths in Thailand and they always seem to be men.

Re: Farang deaths in Hua Hin
I was told of an elderly gentleman cyclist knocked off his bike by a motorcycle close to the entrance to Palm Hills outside the Excellent Golf Shop last Tuesday. He suffered what appeared to be a quite serious head injury (no helmet). There was no news of the outcome.

I didn't mention moderators at all !!buksida wrote:If you have a reliable and official news source then why not post the stories yourself?

I was simply commenting that I hadn't seen anything posted by anybody on the Forum regarding these deaths.
Good to see that a couple of people responded. Maybe we can all try and put more local "news" on here.

Sad indeed, and I suspect I'm being completely naive here - but : -usual suspect wrote:I heard last night that the cyclist knocked off his bike Nr Palm Hills by a motorcycle sadly died.. R.I.P. Sir.
It's been mentioned many times on this forum that both (some) expats and (most) tourists tend to shy away from helmets whilst on motorcycles/scooters. Question is do expat cyclists tend to shy away from helmets/head protection? If so, why - where's the difference? Surely the same dangers are there on Thailand's roads.

Re: Farang deaths in Hua Hin
I, and my family always wear helmets when cycling, which isn't as often as we would like.
From my observation, I would say the ratio of Farangs wearing helmets when cycling, is much higher than those wearing them when on a motorcycle. Of course, there are still those who think they are bulletproof.

Yes, Sven was killed on his bicycle. His funeral was yesterday. He had been living in Tippawan 5.
Re: Farang deaths in Hua Hin
Fortunately wearing a helmet when cycling is a choice whereas on a motorcycle it is mandatory (although as we all know subject to the latest BIB campaign). Cycle helmets do not offer the same protection and their open design I feel leaves the rider exposed to being caught on branches etc with the possibility of increased leverage and twisting motion when securely attatched to ones head. I know that in Western Australia cycle helmets are mandatory and hope this does not spread. Perhaps one day pedestrians will have to wear helmets too! There is always the question of whether a helmet gives a false sense of security resulting in the rider taking more risks. Is there any information on the relationship between faring deaths and cycle helmets?
I choose not to wear a helmet when cycling and respect those who do wear one.
Rant over. Any death has a serious effect those close to the deceased and it is good that in this forum the moderators control posts to avoid causing distress by incorrect information.

Re: Farang deaths in Hua Hin
i can personally recall at least 10 people I know who have died resulting from head injuries while riding a bike or motorcycle in Thailand, none of whom where wearing a helmet.
In many cases the rider's head clipped the high kerb.
Whether they would have died anyway because their helmet got caught on branches or they would have survived because they were wearing a helmet, I will let you decide.

Re: Farang deaths in Hua Hin
Just to show that I am not getting on a lonely pedestal, a couple of links that discuss the subject of cycle helmets (mods please erase if this is a violation of forum policy).
http://www.whycycle.co.uk/cycling-advic ... g-helmets/
http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/brain-surge ... e-helmets/
The roads here are lethal and every time I venture out either in my car, on my motorcycle or bicycle I always expect other road users to do stupid things and they usually do.
Most of the Farang unnatural deaths we hear about are due to the actions of others be it someone seeking financial gain or road accidents and the two sometimes being combined. Where local (dis)reputable farangs die through illness or natural causes their passing is normally mentioned and as I said, I feel the forum covers this well with adequate controls to avoid misinformation.
There was a motorcycle helmet discussion a while ago and perhaps if there is interest a separate cycle helmet discussion should be created rather than distract the general theme of this thread.

Re: Farang deaths in Hua Hin
We will keep this thread open for unofficial announcements of farang fatalities in Hua Hin.
It is not a discussion on bicycle helmets.
