Great posts Big Boy

In summary it appears very little has changed aside from some vegetation growth.

I might post some pictures of my body from 2014 to now. Basically similar, but a hill has formed in the middle, they have deforested the top end but new growth can be seen in the ears, nose and back. The surface of the face needs some roadworks to remove cracking.

:lach: I was never expecting too much change on the Hilton to Takiab legs. However the Southern leg of the journey shows some huge change.

I think the biggest changes will come on the route North, where 4.5 years ago, there was a lot of construction, collapsing sea walls, condos showing significant deterioration etc.

Looking towards the Centara Grand again. Not much has changed, but the trees do look to have grown a little.
The gardener was being threatened by a large topiary elephant when I had a wander around there a couple of weeks ago.

Winds blow trash ashore on Hua Hin beaches

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/asean/ ... recent_box

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: Officials, workers and volunteers are busy cleaning up trash from the beaches of Hua Hin - even as more is expected to be blown ashore.

The Hua Hin Municipality on Monday deployed 50 workers and other helping hands, including volunteers and security personnel, to pick up piles of trash that washed up onto about 10 kilometres of the resort district's beaches.

Jeerawat Phrammanee, the assistant to the provincial governor, blamed the rubbish invasion on seasonal winds that blew debris and trash dumped into the Gulf of Thailand in several coastal provinces onto Hua Hin's famous beaches.

Workers were collecting about three tonnes of trash per day, and up to almost five tonnes on some days, the official said. The rubbish included coconuts, dried tree branches, plastic items and glass bottles.

Mr Jeerawat expected the worst was still to come. Up to 100 tonnes of trash could wash up on the district's beaches this month, he said.

2. Market Village to Soi 77

Following up on comment from part 1, the first 9 legs of this walk will be within a long established beach resort - major change can not be expected. In many instances, the 2018 photo should be almost identical to the 2014 photo.

Due to well documented shoe problems, this leg was performed in 2 parts. The biggest difference between the days was the tremendous amount of rubbish washed ashore before the second day’s journey, where I completed my journey to Khao Takiab. I split this leg at Soi 75.

The 2nd day also proved troublesome because despite using tide tables, and walking at low tide, the water level stayed very high, which presented significant problems on leg 5, but more about that later.

The tented village has gone, so the beautification project obviously worked here. Of particular note here is the blue sign. I’ve seen the publicity, and I’ve probably passed other similar areas as I’ve walked, but this is the first time I’ve noticed a smoking area. Had I been a smoker, I’d have probably been on my 4th or 5th by now. I wasn’t looking for it, but nothing has really jumped out at me to warn me this is a restricted smoking beach. The thing that has struck me is the location – directly in front of a residential property (I wonder if they were consulted about the smell) and the total lack of shade. It was my belief that smoking areas were shaded. I wonder if living directly beside an ashtray affects the value of the property.

I don’t know if it’s just time of year, but kite school monstrosities were not as prevalent on this walk. I actually got the impression some schools had made more permanent bases in beachside properties, but this was only my assumption.

A stairway to where? It’s pretty amazing that this fairly grand stairway just leads to a wilderness. This is prime central beachfront real estate, and it has been left to nature. Maybe this is part of the beautification perceived when they took away the sunbeds and beach umbrellas. There is sign of habitation, but how long ago that was, who knows?

Not a lot of change, but I guess the owner has either employed a gardener, or enjoys pottering around the garden themselves. A definite improvement in this area, much tidier.

Napa Navin Condominium, distinctive because of it’s blue funnel. Situated at Soi 75, it is where I used to park my car before taking my dogs on the beach most nights. This is also the point where I gave up the first part of my walk because of shoe problems. I was not expecting the end of Soi 75 to look like this after the recent rains. Heavy rainfall normally results in Soi 75 becoming a raging river, and the beach level often drops up to 6’ from the end of the Soi. Either the Tessebahn have replaced the sand in quick time, or that scenario has just not happened this time.

This is often quite a smelly entrance to the beach, with the smell from the bins getting quite strong.

Only one thing to say about changes in the photographs, the ball shaped bush seems to have shrunk.

Baan Saechuan. Nothing much changed here. However, from my dog walks, I know the staircase has been severely damaged by storms several times, and seems to get rebuilt annually. One interesting feature of the stairway for dog walkers is on the 3rd step up there’s a footbath that contains freshwater. This is obviously provided for bathers to wash their feet on the way back from the beach, but our dogs are not fussy. I think they smell the fresh water, and it proves an excellent refreshment stop for them. They’re obviously frowned upon by the security guard who stands at the top of the steps, but he never attempts to chase our Rottweiler away.

Surf Spot, Hua Hin. This always looks quite inviting, with a great view overlooking the beach. Although basically no change, it did look a little shabbier this time. In the 2018 photo, you can see the weathering (or tidal) effect by the distance from the beach to the first step.

Beach Café

Not much change here. My experience from dog walking is that sun beds and umbrellas are stowed away neatly at night. I think the Surf Spot kite parking facility is new, or at least it wasn’t marked in 2014.

Again not much change. A little damage to the sea wall, but nothing serious. The bit I find interesting are the tree stump and branches on the stairway. How did they get there? Were they trapped there during a storm, or have they been moved there manually? If the latter, why?

The Jet Ski Centre. On the face of it, there is very little change. However, from dog walking experience, this area is a lot safer now. So, what’s changed? In the 2014 photo, you see an old tractor in use. That tractor used to really churn up the sand, and when the water came over it, there were some treacherous areas where walker’s legs would be sucked under. The suction was very strong, and twice I had to pull my granddaughters from the sand’s vice like grip (minus their shoes, which were lost forever). The centre has since replaced the tractor with a winch, and we’ve never experienced the problem since.

Only 3 photos instead of 4 – the 2018 photo incorporates 2 2014 photos. A tented city – did this vanish, and has risen from the ashes, or did the fact there is a beach bar there mean it survived the beach clean-up? The beach café has been there quite a while, in fact, I still remember our old member Richard’s (RIP) report of the opening.

No 2014 version of this one because it is totally new. It is a new(ish) beachside seafood restaurant. I must say, it looks much nicer after dark.

My least favourite part of Hua Hin Beach. I hate the smell of whatever it is that comes from that water source from Soi 77. When the tide is high, or the stream is flowing into the sea, I will not pass this area, and neither will I let my dogs go into the water. I’ve no idea what it is (probably harmless), but I seriously avoid it.

Beach Bar & Restaurant often looks lovely when I pass it after dark, and the little tables and chairs are nicely laid out. It was closed as I passed it this day – don’t know if it was temporary, seasonal or just closed.

Great report, good seeing the changes over time.

Did you take the 2014 set at the same time of year? It would be interesting to see if the number of tourists and beach-goers has changed.

Good report, BB. I look forward to the rest.
I used to walk from the Centara to KT about 3-4 times a week but I haven't ventured onto it since they brought in the smoking ban. That, incidentally, has just been coincidental but it does date when I stopped. I am a smoker but can go 1.5 hours without lighting up. I've just got out of the routine and have other things to occupy me now.
Your reports have reminded me that I should start up my walks again even if only 1-2 times a week.

I loved it, and am waiting for the right tides to venture North to Cha-Am again - that's where the real changes will be.

I'm currently wearing my slippers. I've thought about it, and while I've still got the 'indestructible' Crocs, and I'm not sure if I'll bother getting them repaired. I've got 3 other pairs, and the hospital has told me not to wear Crocs. Don't worry, I;ll decide before I reach Cha-Am.

Using information from berlinmichael's tide tables today http://www.ukho.gov.uk/EasyTide/EasyTid ... onLength=7 , I set off to start the Northern journey to Cha-Am:
tide.png
tide.png (54.46 KiB) Viewed 1098 times
I parked near the palace, and walked to the Chinese Temples, arriving about 10am, only to be greeted with:

DSC00312.jpg (135.23 KiB) Viewed 1098 times
So what am I getting wrong guys? Why was there water there? I need plenty of sand for these walks to replicate my 2014 walks. I did my walk at low tide last week, and ended up having to climb walls. Low water of 1.4 Mtrs does not sound excessive to me. I know when fishing in the UK, and using tide tables regularly, there were occasional neap tides, and low water was still fairly high, but looking at the patterns, we don't seem to be in a period of seriously high low tides.

Is it anything to do with the rainy season? If so, maybe I need to postpone the Northern leg until the new year.

To finish on a high, I wore my really old Crocs today, and they did not fall apart.

I walk from there to the South often when I'm in town but I've rarely seen the tide low enough to walk to the North. Once earlier in the year it was and I took some pictures under the pier and walked through it but it doesn't seem to be that low very often when I'm there.

There are several other sources of tide tables:

I am sure you know, but don't forget that the predictions are based on the known lowest water level.
