It's expected to reach Bangkok early next month. The Bangkok governor has been seen on Amarin TV inspecting the deluge as it happens, and one would hope he will clear the drains to enable faster drainage, unlike his predecessor, who selectively blocked off certain areas and succeeded in prolonging the suffering for a large percentage of the population.

His predecessor was a left over General put out to pasture, wasn't he. I remember he was clueless about a lot of things from my reading the News back then.

BREAKING: Nonthaburi province, which is just north west of Bangkok, is on flood alert Tuesday with its municipality ordering 130,000 sand bags to protect its banks from the Chao Phraya River and telling residents along the river to move furniture and belongings to a high ground.

The move came despite Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reassured earlier on the same day that the capital will be spared.

The Mekong River level in Nong Khai province on the morning of August 29 was 50 centimeters above the riverbank. The water level is rising at an average rate of 1-2 centimeters per hour, increasing rapidly and continuously. It has flooded houses in Nong Khai City Municipality. Villagers are moving their belongings to higher ground and evacuating to safe areas.

The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) has issued a warning to people in provinces along the Mekong River to be vigilant about the impacts of overflowing water levels in Chiang Rai, Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, Ubon Ratchathani, and Nong Khai.

That's a 3 year project to replace that bridge, and probably several others after these floods subside. Forget the 10,000 baht handout, use it to fix and improve the damn infrastructure!

Capital readies for Chao Phraya to overflow

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... o-overflow

Water from heavy flooding in upstream northern provinces has reached Bangkok as the capital prepares for the Chao Phraya River to overflow, according to the Royal Irrigation Department (RID).

The first wave of water from floods that ravaged the upper northern provinces eight days ago has flowed down the Chao Phraya to Bangkok following an expedited discharge of the water by the Chao Phraya dam barrage in Chai Nat..................

Flooding continues in 4 Thai provinces

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -provinces

Floodwater remains in Mae Rim district of Chiang Mai on Sunday after run-off hit over 200 villages in the northern district on Saturday night.

Flooding continued to afflict three northern provinces and a northeastern province in Thailand on Sunday.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation on Sunday reported flooding in Chiang Rai, Phitsanulok and Sukhothai provinces in the North and Nong Khai province in the Northeast.

According to Chaiwat Chuntirapong, director-general of the department, the floodwater resulted from persistent rain and affected 3,979 families in 223 villages in the four provinces.

By provinces, flooding continued in:

Chiang Rai: in Khun Tan, Phaya Mengrai, Thoeng and Wiang Kaen districts

Nong Khai: Muang, Ratana Wapi, Sangkhom, Sri Chiang Mai and Tha Bo districts

Phitsanulok: Bang Rakam and Phrom Phiram districts

Sukhothai: Kong Krailat, Muang, Sawankhalok, Sri Nakhon, Sri Samrong and Sri Satchanalai districts

Flood levels were declining in Chiang Rai, Sukhothai and Nong Khai but rising in Phitsanulok.

Meanwhile, a Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation branch in the northern province of Chiang Mai reported run-off from Doi Moncham mountain hit seven villages in Mae Rim district on Saturday night. Residents and visitors were briefly evacuated from their accomodation. The deluges flowed into the Ping River.

Since Aug 16 flooding and run-off has affected 23 provinces, killed 22 people and injured 19 others.

NNT- National News Bureau of Thailand

Heavy rainfall since yesterday (Aug 31) has caused flash floods in Mae Rim district, Chiang Mai province, prompting Doi Suthep-Pui National Park to temporarily close Tat Mok and Mae Sa Waterfalls and deploy rangers to assist affected residents.

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park Protection Units have been dispatched to support communities in four different villages, all within Mae Raem subdistrict. Officials are currently assessing damage and providing aid to those impacted by the floods.

Residents and tourists are urged to avoid the affected areas to ensure safety and allow relief operations to proceed smoothly. The park will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.

For those in need of assistance, the Forest Protection Hotline at 1362 is available 24/7.

Chao Phraya dam to release more water, river rising

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ver-rising

The Chao Phraya dam will soon begin discharging more water as the river continues to rise, swollen by flood runoff from the northern provinces.

Thanet Soomboon, director of the Water Management and Hydrology Bureau, said on Monday that the release rate would be increased within days.

He said water from the northern floods was heading rapidly downstream into provinces in the central region.

The barrage dam in Chai Nat was releasing 1,400 cubic metres of water per second and it was planned to increase the discharge rate by about 100 m3/s over the next two days.

The dam uses the level of the river in Nakhon Sawan as an indicator to determine water management. The water was flowing through Nakhon Sawan at 1,550 m3/s, and Mr Thanet expected it to rise to 1,600 or even 1,700 m3/s within days.

Water released from the dam is normally directed into the irrigation canal network and water retention reservoirs along the Chao Phraya to at least delay flooding in the central provinces and Bangkok.

Mr Thanet was confident there would be no repeated of the disastrous flooding in 2011. The volume of water being released by the dam remained below that of 13 years ago, he said.

The Chao Phraya dam unleashed 2,700 cubic metres of water per second during the great flood of 2011.

The Office of National Water Resources and the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department have released separate alerts on possible flash floods and landslides in all regions throughout this week. Provinces on alert include Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Nong Khai, Rayong, Phuket and Surat Thani. There is also a flood warning for Bangkok.

The Meteorological Department forecast on Monday warned of widespread gusty winds and heavy rain from Tuesday to Saturday. "More rain, including some heavy rain, is likely in many places with isolated very heavy rain possible in the East and South," it said.
