Private Messages - are they used enough?
Am I the only one who's a bit fed up with clicking on a post to find it says something like "Thanks " or "See you there!!! " or "Can I book a table for 4?"
These are irritating enough, but there have been several examples recently of what have effectively been personal (and frankly trivial) "conversations" being carried out within a thread.
Does anyone else feel the same or am I just getting grumpy as I gradually leave my youth behind and enter middle age...?
And if there is agreement, is this something we just have to put up with or is there something that can be done to encourage members to put PMs to the use for which they were intended (and indeed named)?

This is the way
Re: Private Messages - are they used enough?
you then run the risk of threads being littered with " I've sent you a PM" etc and that would be even more boring!
Re: Private Messages - are they used enough?
no
"All the otters don't understand me"
"We might make you bother"
"We might make you bother"
Re: Private Messages - are they used enough?
I PM quite a lot where it is a one to one message that the forum does not need to see or I don't want them to see
I don't think there is anything wrong in being polite (thank you) or informative (see you there) or please book me a table. Often the latter two prompt others to participate
Question of balance I guess
Maybe the mods or Admin will be able to give us an idea of the volume of PM's sent

It’s none of my business what people say and think of me. I am what I am and do what I do. I expect nothing and accept everything. It makes life so much easier.

This is the most irritating type of post. Why doe people on forums (not just this one) feel the need to advertise to the rest of us that they have send Mr/Mrs X a PM?!!moja wrote:you then run the risk of threads being littered with " I've sent you a PM" etc and that would be even more boring!

Because unless you log in, you won't know. You might also miss the new messages since you don't usually look at that part of the screen.Pleng wrote:This is the most irritating type of post. I get an email every time I get a private message

That feature has to be user enabled - some users have it switched off.

You have to specify that under "User Preferences" on the control panel:Pleng wrote: I get an email every time I get a private message
Notify me on new private messages: Yes No
Pop up window on new private message: Yes No

We did indeed . I should change above to read "Board Preferences, not user preferences. Pete

But isn't this enabled by default? I don't ever remembering switching it on myself. If people don't want to be notified by email why should...prcscct wrote:You have to specify that under "User Preferences" on the control panel:Pleng wrote: I get an email every time I get a private message
