What is the latest on camera shops in Hua Hin? Is there anything with a decent range of DSLRs at reasonable prices or is Lazada still the place to go?

There is now another camera shop selling high end stuff on the top floor of Market Village but I haven't a clue what their pricing is like. I don't suppose physical shops anywhere can compete with online suppliers these days.

Well it pays to shop around. There are two branches of 'Big Camera' in Hua Hin. Avoid the Bluport one as it is significantly more expensive than the one in Market Village which was close enough to Lazada prices to warrant a purchase there.

Sick of posting your photos to Farcebook and having them claim them as their own? Instagram not much better?

Finally I've found a decent social website for photographers, pro and am. Have a look at https://500px.com and get inspired!

Have used 500px extensively for corporate jobs and always found them to be very good and well-priced.

...probably a takeover target for facebook at some point soon!

Perhaps someone can explain this one?

Watching a nature documentary just an hour ago. A group of people on a trail in a forest and one man is wearing a white sweatshirt with the word NIKE on the front. This is moving TV video, not still photographs.

A minute or two later the camera is back on the same group of people further down the trail, same man, same sweatshirt but it now shows the word EKIN, with perhaps the E and K turned around the other way.

What happened with the equipment to give that image? Pete

Maybe they reversed the image to disguise the fact that they'd got bored and decided to go home?

I'd be surprised if video can't be flipped like that in post processing.

Thanks and it appears Homer and BB could be correct IMO. There is an entire world of instructions out there about reversing images on video and mirroring images. It seems some do it to get past copyright rules on YouTube.

Why this particular TV documentary decided to do it on a shirt in a mountain forest in northern Spain is beyond me, but oh well. :thumb: Pete

I doubt that this will happen here anytime soon, but it may affect people travelling from the US, or Europe:

Airline Laptop Ban Guide For Photographers(By Staff | May 30, 2017 )

https://www.outdoorphotographer.com/blo ... ographers/#

Concerned about traveling with your laptop and expensive camera gear? Learn about the best ways to handle the ban on laptops in airline carry-ons

You probably know that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has banned devices larger than a smartphone from airline carry-ons on flights to the U.S. from several airports in the Middle East and Africa. Recent news reports suggest that the ban may be expanded soon to include all international flights to and from the U.S.

What does this mean for photographers who are travelling internationally? And how can you best prepare to minimize the disruption and protect your laptop and camera gear? Outdoor Photographer contributor and Muench Workshops leader Andy Williams prepared the following advice for workshop participants and generously offered to share this guidance with OP readers.

The full text of the guide is below. You can also download the PDF guide that Williams prepared: Muench-Workshops-Airline-Electronics-Ban-Guide.

I'm concerned about the author's recommendation it's "Time to invest in a Pelican or similar case". A Pelican case shouts "VALUABLES INSIDE". Solution is a Pelican case inside a cheap, preferably used, suitcase, one that sighs 'economy class'. Obviously, you can pack stuff around the Pelican case.

Need some help from you photo bugs out there, please.

Doing some limited window shopping on computer, and only want inexpensive entry level kit.

So far, think I'm decided on Nikon D5300 and not sure whether the 18-55 or 18-140 VR lens. Think I need actually hands on, to decide if I actually need the extra. ฿6k difference between kit sets.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, along with comments about EC Mall in Krung Thep as the seller.

Thanks

The Nikon DX sensor is not full frame and you will have to consider the 1.5x crop factor for the lenses, making them roughly 28-80 and 28-200 repsectively. The second lens will not only give you a greater magnification capability, it will also help with delivering bokeh on portraits if you have sufficient distance between you and the subject, something of benefit with smaller sensor sizes. Neither lens will be that fast, i.e. allowing good low light capability and the 18-140 will be slower at the maximum focal length than the 18-55. This is partially compensated by optical stabilisation of the lens, meaning you have more success with slower shutter speeds and, therefore, longer exposure times.

If you’re taking nature shots during daylight hours then you will benefit from the longer lens. If you’re doing twilight landscapes or indoor action shots go for the shorter one as it likely has greater lowlight capabilities. Or get a tripod for the longer lens and avoid indoor action!
