The free ones (like AnchorFree etc) are OK for just surfing the net and work fine but are a little heavy and intrusive with the advertising. If you actually want to download something (like movies/games) whilst using the VPN then you will need the paid for version as most of the free versions have millions of users all over the world on their free servers.

I use Strong VPN with a San Francisco IP to allow me access to Netflix, etc., and I am very satisfied with its performance.

I've just renewed my annual subscription to HideMyAss, which despite its quirky name is an excellent service. It allows you to choose where you want to be 'based' in the world and you can change it whenever you want. There are other useful add-ons such as anonymous, disposable email accounts and a secure file transfer service.

I just paid $59 for the year and SWMBO has been very impressed by our ability to enjoy the Beeb's coverage of the Olympics whilst in Italy.

Can anyone advise if TOR is a VPN? I was utilizing this for anonymity and it lead to my on line banking being suspended. On contacting my bank they advised that log ons had been from numerous different locations and they suspended access to protect me. I told them that I had been using TOR and they advised that this may have been the cause as TOR continually uses random paths to the destination computer.

After a lot of discussion I was finally put back on line and no longer use TOR.

It seems to be a case of you pays your money and take your pick with VPNs, Hidemyass and Strong have good reviews.
I will plump for either of these, or an outsider which is coming up on the rails that may suit my requirements is Streamvia, UK based with good set up info, and good customer service reviews.
I think they also have a server in Singapore.

Tor isn't a VPN, it is basically a mechanism for obfuscating your identity, location and traceability.

One solution for VPN's is to hire a private server facility and use it as a VPN. The benefits are that you will have a fixed, locatable IP address which will remove all of the issues about ID and geolocatability (which is becoming a real drag). You are also not paying for a VPN, but a server facility. That may or may not matter to you on your 'paper' trail. You are also not competing against other users of the facility. Most VPN facilities are just wrappers around this kind of server. Cost wise it is similar to, but probably slightly more expensive than one provided by a 3rd party.

A lot of VPS providers don't like you doing tunneling or using their facilities as VPN end-points (generalised paranoia about why you would want to hide yourself...). My provider has about 40 different builds available, all *nix clones, but one of them is pre-setup to use OpenVPN (so I use that one...). Configuring it is pretty straightforward for all but the most technically challenged. Minimum prices are £5/$8 a month depending mostly on bandwidth.

You ought to be aware that using VPN's is frowned on in LOS (at least for the locals, because it can bypass a lot of the content scanning), so PM me for details.

I found a good service with encrypted tunnels of Pirateray(.com) and it works fine for me. It masks my real IP, location and online activities, works with any browser and any SOCK5 compatible applications to be anonymous.
It's easy to install and very cheap for such a good support, they also give 1 week to try free.
