Which Mobile Phone?

Good specs and good reviews - being run out, now superceded by the Motorola 6 models.

Motorola always made a very good phone in the old days and I haven't read that anything has deteriorated under Google, and now Lenovo ownership. Something worth reviewing at least. Pete

All the reviews of the G5’s have been positive - the only downside is that it’s a bit long in the tooth now and there are likely to be a few out there with an updated spec - even the G6?

So? If the phone does what you need it to, then it's up to date.

HOWEVER, once a manufacturer stops updating the Android version, you're not protected from future security threats.

That’s a bit like everything in this world - a car made 5 years ago might still do all you need but it doesn’t have all of the latest features and eventually they become almost redundant - either deliberately because it’s no longer supported by the manufacturer or because the opposition offers so much more.

But the point i was making was that the G5 has been receiving good reports for quite a few years so it’s likely that it has, or is about to be deposed of its place in the top recommended phones (within its price range).

Looking at the following;

Samsung J7 Pro

Bought one in Oct. Needed one with a big screen so my old eyes can see enlarged font. Wanted one with replaceable battery. Only models I found had slower CPUs and lower resolution screens,
Paid 9k

Excellent battery life. Easily get 2 days. Too much of that is listening to music while doing something brainless or watching videos while having to wait. Downside of big screen and big battery is, obviously, size and weight. I almost always wear cargo shorts, so it's not a problem.

One complaint is the screen is curved just a bit. So the screen protector doesn't cover the screen edges. I'm not concerned about scratches. The problem is the touch screen is hit or miss when you need to touch at the edge of the screen protector. Usually I rotate the screen 90 degrees to solve the problem.

The point I was making is if does all you need the latest features are irrelevant. I'm on my 7th phone. The fifth (fourth?) had bluetooth, as have the subsequent ones. It was a latest feature. I've never used bluetooth. It's irrelevant to my needs.

Yes but my reply was to the poster who had recommended the G5 and all I said was that it had been around quite a while so maybe it had, or was about to be deposed of its high placing - I’m sure the phone you have is fit for purpose and you’re happy with it.

Thanks for the comments on the J7 Pro Homer, the new J8 is looking better.

If Lenovo owns Motorola I'll be avoiding it - the current phone is a Lenovo and it has been far from great, although it has survived over two years. BTW I'm not one of those people who replaces my phone every couple of months just to have the latest iPhart or whatever, I'll try and eek the last bit of life out of the bastard and only get another one when the current one literally becomes unusable - which this one almost is!

The more I read about the Motorola - Lenovo link up, the more confused I become. I'm not sure that if you purchase a Motorola phone that you're getting a Lenovo designed/manufactured product. The Motorola may be a completely different design and quality. Pete

Just coming up to the end of my second year with my Motorola G4. It's been a great phone for all the things I have needed to use it for. Ideal screen size for watching Mobdro lol. This is my upgrade from the earlier Moto G which is a lot smaller and still in use. I believe that Motorola is run as a separate company to Lenovo. I will probably upgrade again early in the new year with the G6 that has recently been released.

Comparing Samsung J8 and Motorola G5S Plus on PhoneArena website:

The Motorola is only one year older than the Samsung J8, but the Motorola could be considered to have better overall specs? In particular, the Motorola is now updated to Android 8.1.

IMO, the Motorola (4GB RAM) at 6,000 Baht and the J8 (3GB RAM?) at 9,500 Baht, makes the Motorola the better buy. (The prices are from JayMart website.)

Although I understand that the Samsung is considered to be the ‘better brand’ by many, and some would chose the Samsung. Personally, after using Samsung for a few years, I found them to be poor at updating Android software and overpriced based on specs offered.

Samsung is considered a 'mainstream' brand. By this I mean you can find it (and buy it) at practically any phone booth anywhere in the country.
Moto, on the other hand, is typically offered at the main phone providers only.
So accessories are a lot easier to find for a mainstream phone. Does not necessarily mean it is better or worse than the other as most mobile phones are quite similar these days.

Another thing to note is that many mainstream phone manufacturers (Samsung included) are moving their business model away from mobile phones and concentrating on things that are actually viable in the long term.
This is why the Chinese phones seem to be overtaking them; and given their zero profit margins for some manufacturers you see a glut of cheap, high specification phones.

Buksi, if you see something you like, just go with your heart. They're almost all the same...

Oh, and avoid ACER. Though the one I had was nicely specced, the battery life left a lot to be desired. Which is why I ditched it.

Avoid an ACER mobile phone? That's putting it very mildly. I would say don't even briefly glance in the direction of an ACER. By FAR FAR FAR FAR and away the absolute worst phone I have ever owned. When I bought mine, I had to take it back after three days because I couldn't get it to turn on. They then sent it up to Bangkok where it stayed for the next two and a half weeks. When I got it back, it seemed to be working properly, but that all changed after about another month or so when it just started shutting down whenever it chose to. I would then need to remove the battery and then reinsert it before I could turn the phone back on. Added to this was the fact that a fully charged battery would drain completely within about 10 to 12 hours if I never used the phone at all. If I was using it for browsing the web, battery life was reduced to about 1 hour, sometimes a little longer.
What absolute rubbish, and that from a company which supposedly makes good computers. Never again will I own an ACER phone, even if it was offered to me for free.

The different Samsung phones I've had (only 2) have both been like a Rolls Royce by comparison. I have also heard from several people that Huwei phones are really nice/good, with one friend even saying his Huwei is as good if not better than his iPhon.

You sound just like me. I also use my phones until it becomes virtually impossible to use them. My misses gave me her old Galaxy Pocket after she had had for a couple of years, and it was fine for me, and I was still using it up until about two months ago when the charging port mysteriously got damaged, making it impossible for me to charge the phone. However, by the time this happened, I was no longer able to update any apps or download anything, so I was forced into relying on my ACER which had to be permanently connected to a power pack the size of a large brick. Eventually I just couldn't handle anymore for several reasons, so I very reluctantly had to acquire a replacement, in this case a Galaxy 7J which I'm sure will do me for several years.

Takiap, I got the ACER because I believed that if they made decent computers, a mobile phone shouldn't have been that bad. At least the GPS was better than the ASUS with the big battery I was also considering at the time. No, definitely not recommended.
That's why I (finally) got the Sony touchscreen (it's Achilles Heel) replaced. Been happy with it ever since.
