Help with Laptop Repair

Post by JAGfx »

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a decent IT whizz around HH. I have a Dell laptop that is only a couple years old and it is coming up with constant Predictive Failure messages re my hard drive. I need the computer for online business and I'm thinking it is not going to last much longer. So if anyone could recommend an IT tech, that would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have posted this same question on a few HH Facebook Group pages, so you may see it a few times. Sorry about that.

That's a warning of imminent hard disk failure - go buy a new hard disk, 1Tb or whatever you need and an external case, take an image of your current disk then swap the two around.

Is it a Windows machine? You can get a free/trial hard disk check here http://www.hdtune.com/ (there are others available, presumably for other operating systems as well).

I had to do this not long ago on my laptop and used Aomei backupper to create the image http://www.backup-utility.com/free-backup-software.html.

I can't remember how much the 1Tb drive cost (about 2000 baht maybe) and the case was a hundred or so. I'm not very computer savvy and it took me a whole day to do but it wasn't that difficult in the end. More waiting for the old drive to copy to the new drive than anything else.

I don't think there's much you can do to resolve the upside down display :)

Thanks Frank for the feedback. I'm not that tech savvie myself and will probably get someone to do all this for me. But if your prices are close to the mark, then i would be happy with that. Cheers.

There are a number of places up on the top/third floor of the old supermarket that would probably do it for you for a few hundred baht and the woman who runs the shop facing you as you enter the third floor will have the hardware you need. Make sure you get your old drive back from them because you can plug it in via the external casing and use it like an external drive, at least until it either dies or you are happy that they have copied absolutely everything.

The 'old supermarket' is on the corner of Petchkasem and Soi 74/2, slightly north of the traffic lights at the 'old post office' and police station. Google Maps co-ords 12.569004, 99.957450

I would suggest you keep important files on a cloud service so you can access them anytime on any computer something like Google Drive. Do that before you remove your old hard drive. Its free and unlike mechanical backups you will never lose the files as they are backed up on multiple Google servers.Unless of course we experience nuclear war,.

HHCanuck, good idea. I do use Google Drive but probably not as much as I should. I'll get onto that. Thanks.

Try the computer repair centre on Petchkasem just a couple of blocks up from the old supermarket. Think the name is PB corporation repair centre. They have a big TV ad on the front of the building. Not sure if anybody speaks english but certainly very knowledgeable.
