I did, but I got the phone unlocked first, I think the SIM card cost me about 300 baht.

Interestingly Orange Thailand pay as you go, will not work in the UK.

yes a local orange "Pay as you go" will work straight away in a orange phone from the uk, the phone does not need unlocking. Mine was fine ( i bought the sim in advance in the Uk from Ebay ) worked soon as landed in BKK.
definitely worth it for the cheap calls .

an orange phone from the uk will NOT work here unless unlocked
orange uk phones are all locked to the network
very easy to get unlocked in the uk or thailand and then just buy whichever sim you choose
i chose orange the only reason for this was that i worked with orange in the uk for 6 years
uk or thailand most of the payg tarrifs are much the same

It does not cost a lot to unlock a Phone in the UK now. You can do it on the net for about £2.

Beter safe to do, than to find out you cant swap cards

Not too sure if I am allowed to tell you a site as that could be advertising, but if you check out some of the adverts here. I sure you can find one company that will do it via txt.

Unless of cause you have one of the very new phones. Other than that just buy a cheap Dual band phone, in the UK, that is unlocked and use that in Thailand with a Sim card you can buy in Thailand.

Phone are also available to buy at the large shopping mails in Thailand, I not know if Hua Hin has one,

Can any one help with this??

but BKK has loads like BMK

They do i-mobile phones which are good, and use the same tech as Motorola

I usually try not to let a mobile phone ruin my holiday. How many of you have ever experienced your teerak's mobile going off at an inopportune moment, and she insists onanswering it?

If, however, staying connected in the LOS is deemed necessary, I wouldn't bother with roaming or dual-tri band stuff. Just go to a secondhand phone shop, a real cheapo will cost around 1000 baht (about 15 GBP), a local SIM card will set you back another 300 or so baht. Use it for the duration of your holiday, and present it to the teerak the day before you leave. (It helps if you get the teerak you're with to register the SIM card in her name, rather than you using your passport).

If you need internet services, you can get a stored-value internet card upstairs at the post office at the junction of Petchkasem and Damnoern Kasem road and use their terminals.

SIM card

I use DTAC, coverage is fine and its 199 baht to get going. Topup cards at any 7/11 or Family Mart.
Any phone shop will unlock your phone, usually for free if you buy a Thai SIM card from them.

Definetely need to unlock your UK orange phone before you leave or any Thai Sim will not work. A tip: do not ask orange UK direct to unlock for you, they will do it but will charge 25 Quid. Go to a phone shop about a fiver or if you know your way around the net you can find unlockers for free, then shove a vodaphone or another network sim in just to check your unlocked.
