Beer Crime (adding ice)

Post by shunpike »

This subject came to me while reading a thread in 'after hours' about the availiability of cold lager in HH. I thought a simple poll about ice in beer might be interesting. I assume most westerners would never think of icing down a beer back home, and it's one of the first things they notice when they come here. Most of my falang friends ice their beer now, but there are some holdouts who simply refuse to give in to the local custom. For the sake of clarity I'm talking about local beer.

If drinking a beer outside, or in a non air place I now always add ice.

I spent a lot of time in Honduras and Costa Rica, and found it popular there. For me, no problem

always unless the beer is smoking cold.

Helps to make sure your own private supply is kept in the icebox under the chiller.

Short of disabling the temp control in Mrs S's place I know no other way of making sure the dimwit staff stop playing with the fridge controls.

Ive given up trying.....

Mr. S; just an aside...

I'm assuming the staff is turning the temp down (making the fridge warmer), what would possess them to do that? I assume you or Mrs. S pay the egat bill, what would the staff gain by toying with the controls?

I'll put a bit of ice in if the Beer isn't properly chilled, Thai Beer is strong enough to take it and is hardly a highend flavoursome brew anyway.

I've got a mate, been in Thailand now for about fifteen years, still absolutely refuses to ice his beer and lets the rest of us know how much we've let down the side by giving into the ice..

Secret is put the ice in. Let it chill for 2 minutes and drink it back before the ice melts

I've been putting ice in my beer ever since I picked up the habit from some of the old-timer expats in Indonesia.
As well as keeping the beer cold it also lowers the strength slightly and this stops you having quite such large hangovers, which aren't much fun in the heat of the next day.
The nights out tend to last for many hours in Asia anyway, so it's not as if you don't get enough to drink.

I was once told that that the habit originated in Vietnam (where beer is naturally served warm) during the war. GIs put ice in their beer because it would make any powdered glass appear efflorescent.

Whether there is any truth in it, who knows?

I voted no - It just isn't right

personal opinion of course - The missus puts Ice in hers and few other long time Hua Hin residents I drink with do - as well as the other tricks like putting some bottles in the freezer et.

Mind you Thai beers are not nice when warm...

Exactly!

I'd rather drink a watered down cold one than a warm one!
