Just returned from HH and although in Australia, we drink a lot of wine, when in Thailand, always seem to have a fairly wine free holiday.

Tried some Thai wine in Phuket last year and did not like it at all.
In HH this year, tried some red and white wine called Mona Lisa (serve it in the pizza shop on the corner opposite Ken Diamond Travel), was the one that we found we liked the most.

Did find supermarkets and bottle shops that sold plenty of Australian Wine, but bottles that you pay $10.00 Australian Dollars (300baht) at home were costing the equiviliant of $30.00 AUD (1200baht).

We did bring a couple of bottles with us, plus sneaked a 2litre cask into my girlfriends suitcase, so we managed OK.

Other than that, enjoyed copious amounts of Singa and Heinakin beers

From the look of your other recent posts, Chelsea, you both definitely had a culinary experience in HH this time.

Been to Thailand for the last 3 years, Krabi/Ao Nang/Railey Beach 1st year, Phuket/Phi Phi last year and Singapore/Hua Hin this year.

Had a blast in all the places that we have been. Have loved the food, drink and the people wherever we have been so far.

May try to get back to HH in the busy season, does it get much busier around xmas time, or is it much the same as June/July

wine, (or lack of) in Thailand

Post by Nisakiman »

I know this thread is old, but I'm a newby on this forum, and this is a subject close to my heart! I am a wine drinker - a bottle of red a night, on average, I guess, and it's the one thing that I really miss when I'm in Thailand. I read on a Bangkok restaurant site that the duty on wine is 354% of value! No wonder you don't see much of it around! Does anybody know why the tax on wine is so extortionate? I believe this tax applies to wine produced in Thailand also.
Bloody criminal.
Bloody shame.

There is a sort of specialist wine emporium on Petchkasem Road next to the Grand Hotel. It faces the main road and in my experience is slightly cheaper than the supermarkets. It also sells 2 litre bottles of table wine if you want quantity at the expense of quality!

Yes, that place is called Halex. I've bought a lot of booze and wine from them. Their prices are
better (cheaper) than anywhere else I've seen and I've never gotten a bad bottle of wine from them.

And no, I do not own Halex.
