'Must have' food items: where to buy in Hua Hin

Post by Takiap »

Quite a few people often as where they can buy certain foods and etc. in Hua-Hin, so we might as well have a thread dedicated to sourcing those "must have" items. :D

I'll start by asking if anyone knows where I can buy reasonably priced fresh crayfish. I don't mean at a restaurant, but rather from a market, or maybe even from the fishing boats.

A mate of mine in Hat Yai gets fresh crayfish on Saturdays from a local market at just 180 baht per kilo. I originally told him he's talking through his ass, so yesterday he sent me a few pics, both of the price displayed at the market, and some of the few crayfish he bought.

The seafood places by the night market have large crayfish, so I'm sure they must be available somewhere, but I've personally never seen any at the market. Of course it could be because I've never been there early enough.

I have tried finding crayfish before. I didn't give 100% on my search but I did find that Thailand does have crayfish farms which you can find online. I also called a restaurant in bkk that sells them. I think it's called bourbon street. Anyway I asked where I could get some for myself and was told at that time they were not in season. I then showed my wife what I was after and she said she had seen them at Makro before in one of their tanks. Hopefully someone else will have a little more info for you..

The Bourbon Street used to get their crayfish from Kanjanaburi. I don't know if that's the case any more.

.........outside topic I know, but has anyone tried Thai origin wine? There is a winery in Hua Hin and I have visited one in Kao Yai - my brother - in - Law took us there - but I did not buy any. I regret I did not, wine in Thailand is fairly expensive so one might as well try the local one.

I can reasonably argue that wine for some of us is a "must have" item thought.

On a side note - I think the wine prices is the real reason HHfarang moved back to North Carolina?......

Some Thai wine is very ordinary but there are varieties which are very good. Try a trip out to the vineyard, they do tastings.

Being English, I'm not exactly a connoisseur of fine wines but I've been up to the Hua Hin hills winery a couple of times and I thought the red was pretty decent.

The 2008 'Cuvée de Siam Rouge' from Monsoon Valley is a very nice red. Haven't tried the 2010.
It's not a cheap everyday drinking wine though... I keep my bottle for special occasions.
Cannot comment on the whites.
I do like the vineyard though.. nice spot for a ride up and bite of lunch.
GN.

Edit: This is probably off-topic and should in the wine section.

There were a host of reasons, and that one was certainly on the list!
