Andreas Italian Restaurant & Grill

Post by 404cameljockey »

I ate here in April and thought it fantastic. Pricewise I'm sure it's kind of top of the range for Hua Hin but good value from any other perspective. THB 10,000 for two course dinner for four, with one aperitif each and two bottles of good Italian wine. Half what you'd pay in Dubai. I wrote a TripAdvisor review:

Andrea was chef at a top Italian restaurant in Hua Hin before starting his own around one year ago. He is always present in the restaurant to assure quality, and when he took a 10 day break last year he closed the restaurant and gave the staff a break also. The attention shows, the food is superb, my lobster bisque starter was top class, and osso bucco main course was five star. My companions also all had faultless dishes. I can't give five stars because we were served almost warm Gavi di Gavi (white wine). The bottle was cold to the touch but obviously had only been slung in the freezer for a few minutes, and it was annoying to have the wine opened and poured without being warned that it may not be cold. We were each offered a glass of Prosecco while the wine was properly chilled (I think a bottle would have been a better gesture, but never mind). The problem was resolved. Andrea talks to every table of diners, and he agreed with my observation that more popular wines will be well represented in the wine chiller, while less obvious choices may not. However they have two Gavis on their wine list and I had not expected to have such a problem, especially without being warned before the wine was opened (their wine list is good). Apart from this, I'd be happy to give a five star review, the menu is not overlong but is very well chosen, the service was attentive and precise, and the outside rooftop tables give a welcome breeze at the start of the rainy/humid season. Make sure to ask for one.

It that's the same Andreas who used to be the chef at La Grappa he is the best Italian food chef in Hua Hin imho. He's moved a couple of times and wherever he's been his food has been expensive (by local standards) but the best authentic Italian food in the area.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

No, this is a different Itallian. The chef you are referring too is Lucioano Folzini. He is currently at Pizza Garden on Soi 94 over the RR tracks. Great authentic Italian food and much less expensive that Andreas. Andreas worked for a major hotel chain before, I beleive. I have eaten at Andreas and I can only say great things about the food and service. He also has a broader menu and better ambiance. It is at the 5 star end of pricing and reservations are usually required. I will go back, but probably on special occasions.

I'm pretty sure Andreas DID work at La Grappa prior to launching his own place near the Intercontinental.

Thanks for the correction fellow members. I know that Lucioano Folzini also worked there. Maybe he was the chef at that time. But both are great restaurants regardless!

Luciano was at La Grappa before it was called that, many years ago. Luciano is doing well now in soi 94, I think he has one of the best Pizza ovens in town, last time my pizza was cooked in 90 seconds and it was delicious!
I think Andreas sets his target market at those looking for a real fine dining experience. Only been twice and it was superb both times :).

I had good food experiences during my 6 days in Hua Hin, including a Penang curry at Angie's Bistro in Soi 80. She made it 90 pct hot because I said I like spicy. After I struggled somewhat (but and enjoyed finished) she said she'll make it 70 pct nxt time.

Looking forward to moving to HH later this year. :)

Andreas is in a different league. World class. Andrea took a risk going solo with his new restaurant but he has made it work. He's trained & picked his staff well too. Pricey for Hua Hin but still good value for fine dining
