Woman savagely mauled while trying to rescue husband from kangaroo

https://au.news.yahoo.com/woman-savagel ... 45317.html

A wildlife carer has been left with shocking injuries after her family was attacked by a large kangaroo on their south-east Queensland property.

Linda Smith, 64, was left with a punctured lung, broken ribs and internal injuries after she tried to rescue her husband when the kangaroo attacked at Cypress Gardens, south-west of Toowoomba.
Her husband and son were also injured trying to fight off the roo.

Experienced wildlife carer Jimmy Smith threw food scraps out for a mob of 30 kangaroos and wallabies Saturday night when a two-metre kangaroo targeted him.
“Just out of the darkness this huge kangaroo came up and started attacking. It didn’t have a second thought about it,” Mr Smith told 7 News.

A kick in the face flicked off the father’s glasses and he struggled to see.
His wife tried to stop the attack, arming herself with a broom and a block of wood, but the animal was far too strong for either of them.

“Linda came over to try and ward it off so it picked on her. And then I ran and got a shovel. I think it knocked me down – it knocked her down and jumped on her,” Mr Smith said.
“I thought I was fighting for my life at one stage there.”

Their son, Sonny, grabbed a stick then ran out to help his parents, but he was also hurt.
The kangaroo had run away before paramedics arrived at the home just before 7pm.

The Smiths have been wildlife carers for years, raising joeys until they grow up, but they are adamant this was a rogue marsupial.

Ms Smith has had surgery in the Toowoomba Base Hospital for some of her significant injuries and is now in a stable condition.
Despite the attack, she does not want the kangaroo hunted and killed, insisting it was an act of nature, as it is breeding time for the animals so males are often aggressive.

There has been no sign of the large kangaroo since Saturday night. :neener:

Actually, it is a fracking disgrace the amount of energy in the from of gas that is being exported. A big part of the eastern states are short of electricity because of a shortage of gas due to the exports. The coal being exported is another story, but better exported so someplace else can pollute their atmosphere. :guns:

Aussies shocked by secret ingredient used to make banknotes

https://au.news.yahoo.com/aussies-shock ... 51010.html

Most of us probably spend a fair bit of time thinking about money – how to make it, how to spend it – but do we actually know what money is made from?

Australia was the first country in the world to use plastic polymer banknotes, but what most of us don’t realise is that they also contain a small amount of animal by-product.

It’s been revealed that Aussie banknotes contain approximately one per cent tallow – rendered animal fat from cows, pigs and sheep – as a “slip agent” to prevent static and friction.

Tallow has actually been used in the production of banknotes since the late 1990s, but when the British five-pound note introduced the ingredient last year there were widespread protests from vegans and vegetarians.

It’s not only Australia and the UK using tallow in money, as a video by social commentators Project Nightfall reveals.
Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, and 20 other countries also use it.

The video, posted recently to Project Nightfall’s Facebook page, is prefaced with the warning: “This video is not friendly to vegans, Muslims, Hindus or Jews.”

Since being posted the video has been shared more than 5000 times and viewed 63,000 times, with more than 700 people commenting.
Most were horrified by the idea that traces of animal fat were used in banknotes, but others were more open to the idea.

“That is really horrible to hear,” one person wrote.
“But we can all limit cruelty of animals in our daily life by going vegan and using cruelty-free products. It’s too easy.”

“Isn’t it better to just use natural animal parts rather than creating synthetic versions of it?” another person wondered.

“I know it’s bad but you need to think of it another [way], they are finding different uses for the leftover animals instead of wasting it when they can make full use of all of it,” another person wrote.

Tallow is used in numerous everyday household products including soap, candles, moisturisers and plastic bags, as well as many items of clothing and even mobile phones.

“Luckily, there are vegan cosmetics, soaps, etc.,” one Facebook user noted.

“Phones and this money wouldn’t have such alternatives though (apart from using credit cards whenever possible).
“Hopefully, things will change soon.”

Despite continued protests in the UK by animal rights activists, there is no plan to stop using the animal by-product in the five-pound note.

“Any of the vegans who don’t want their money due to this, just send it my way,” one person wrote on Facebook under the Project Nightfall video.
“I will dispose of it properly for you.”

Same-sex penguin couple become parents

https://au.news.yahoo.com/sex-penguin-c ... 40137.html

Two male penguins who paired up as a “same-sex couple” have successfully incubated a baby chick and are “doting” on their tiny offspring, an Australian aquarium announced Friday.

Gentoo penguins Sphen and Magic are happily “taking turns caring for their baby chick”, born on October 19 weighing 91 grams, said Tish Hannan of the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium.

Sphen and Magic had caught the attention of aquarium workers when they were constantly seen waddling around and going for swims together.

They then began to build a collective nest of pebbles, prompting the aquarium to provide a dummy egg for them to look after and, when they proved up to the task, a real egg.

The pair have bonded, Hannan, Sea Life’s penguin department supervisor, told AFP.
“They recognise each other’s signature calls and songs,” the supervisor said.
“Only bonded penguins will be able to successfully find their partner using their calls when they are separated.”
Unlike many mammal species, male and female penguins take on the same parenting roles, and share parental duties 50-50.

“There is no real difference when it comes to breeding behaviours between males and females,” Hannan explained.
“So it is common to have male-male or female-female showing courtship and breeding behaviour.”

In the wild, however, these courtships are unlikely to result in a chick, so they are normally short-lived, with the penguins becoming unsatisfied and looking for another partner.

“Because we have given Sphen and Magic the opportunity to have a potentially successful breeding season, it is very likely that they will return to each other again next year,” Hannan said.

This is not the first time same-sex penguin couples have adopted eggs in captivity, with a handful of zoos worldwide reporting similar cases.
In 2009, two male penguins – Z and Vielpunkt – successfully hatched and reared a chick that was rejected by its heterosexual parents at a zoo in Berlin.

Before them came Roy and Silo, two male chinstrap penguins at a zoo in New York who were spotted frequently trying to mate with each other.
After they tried to incubate a rock, zookeepers gave them a foster egg which they successfully hatched. Their foster chick, a female called Tango, eventually paired up with another female.

Mahathir: Malaysia 'won't accept' LGBT rights

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/asean/ ... gbt-rights

Malaysian leader Mahathir Mohamad on Thursday said his country cannot accept LGBT rights such as same-sex marriage, dismissing them as "western" values.

The blunt remarks come against a backdrop of what activists say is a growing intolerance towards the LGBT community in Malaysia.

"The institution of marriage, the institution of the family has now been disregarded in the West. Why should we follow that? Our value system is as good," he added.

Builders make disturbing find inside wall during renovation

https://au.news.yahoo.com/builders-make ... 58869.html

Construction workers renovating an old building in the US state of Georgia have discovered an estimated thousand teeth tucked in one of the walls.

While the builders preparing the commercial space in downtown Valdosta were caught off guard by the find, it’s not the first time it’s occurred recently.

Main Street Director Ellen Hill says teeth also have been found in the walls of former dentist offices in Greensboro and Carrolton.

What do all three buildings have in common? They were all once dentist’s offices.

Historical Society researcher Harry Evans says the Valdosta building was constructed in 1900, and its first tenant was a dentist named Clarence Whittington.

He says it later housed another dentist named Lester G. Youmans until at least 1930.

Valdosta police say they haven’t found evidence of a crime. Project manager Dustin Merriman says the crew disposed of the teeth.

Several theories, all of which are unproven, have emerged as to how and why dentists would dispose of such teeth by fitting them in a wall.

One of which suggests the non-existent sanitation and waste management services left them with few alternatives.
Consideration was also given to the public health implications that apply to throwing rotten teeth into a standard rubbish pile, given the bacteria on rotting teeth can be dangerous.

Another more obscure theory is that storing teeth in the walls was a form of tradition.

Vegetarian diners discover chunks of murdered man in their dishes

Diners at a vegetarian restaurant in Bangkok were left with a sour taste in their mouths when they discovered they were eating human flesh.

The veggie-loving patrons were initially put off by chunks of meat floating in their food, but then it got worse, according to Asia One.

When one customer dropped a dime on the eatery to cops, something more macabre was discovered.

Police say a missing 61-year-old patron of the restaurant were discovered in the blood-spattered kitchen.

Police mocked for ticket mix-up
Published: 1/11/2018 at 06:16 PM
Online news: https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/transp ... ket-mix-up

Traffic police have cancelled a ticket issued to a woman motorist fined 500 baht after her car was spotted illegally changing lanes - while being carried on the back of a tow truck.

The upset woman posted photos showing what happened on social media after she received the ticket in the mail, asking why she should have to pay the fine. Netizens quickly piled criticism and ridicule on the police.

Deputy police spokesman Kritsana Pattanacharoen said on Thursday that Traffic Police Sub-Division 4 reported the ticket had been issued by an officer monitoring surveillance camera footage.

It showed a tow truck transporting a Toyota car with Bangkok licence plates illegally changing lanes at a bridge over Kamnan Maen intersection on Kalapreuk Road in Bang Khunthian district, Bangkok, at 11.38am on Oct 1.

The officer mistakenly issued the ticket to Phakhawan Karunyalert, the owner of the car on the back of the truck, Pol Col Kritsana said.

It was the tow truck that broke the law, not Ms Phakkhawan’s vehicle, the deputy spokesman said.

Police had contacted the woman on Oct 31 and told her the wrongly-issued ticket had been cancelled.

The officer who issued it had been ordered to submit a report to his superiors and was being investigated, Pol Col Kritsana said.

Facebook user May Karunyalert posted on her page on Oct 31 that “Evidence is very, very firm….cannot get off the hook. Am I wrong? Please tell me, brothers. I have to pay a 500-baht fine, don't I? (three emoticon stickers) Thank you law enforcers for bringing me a smile today (one emoticon sticker).”

She later updated her post, adding that she had since been contacted by the officer who issued the ticket and she did not need to pay the fine.

Her original post was suddenly deleted on Thursday evening.

SORRY, BUT HUMAN FLESH WASN’T SERVED TO VEGETARIANS IN BANGKOK

http://www.khaosodenglish.com/news/crim ... n-bangkok/

BANGKOK — Cannibals planning to dine at a suburban vegetarian restaurant that, according to everyone’s social media timelines, served human flesh to its customers are in for disappointment.

In what sounded like a perfect Halloween story, online tabloids including Vice and Daily Mail stunned the world with breathless accounts of a wannabe See Uey mixing his murder victim’s flesh into the meat. While there was indeed a murder, police said most other details mentioned in those stories were false.

The restaurant in question, located in the eastern district of Lat Krabang, first made news when police found a body Oct. 23 hidden in a well behind the restaurant. Family members later identified the body as Prasit Inpathom, 61, who had been missing several days.

The suspect accused of stabbing and killing Prasit was arrested Oct. 27.

That’s where reality and copy-paste delusion parted ways in the internet echo chamber of untruths.

Despite the delicious details reported by a number of outlets – all of which relied on links to other unsubstantiated reports – the restaurant had not yet opened at the time of Prasit’s death as it was still under construction.

The suspect also fled immediately rather than hang out to filet the evidence of his crime.

Following the chain of hyperlinked attribution back to the source, the story was first spread wide by Singapore’s Asia One, which relied on articles translated from Chinese-language news portals.

Baby floating in sea saved by fisherman who thought it was a doll

https://au.news.yahoo.com/baby-floating ... 27722.html

A fisherman has been hailed a hero after rescuing an 18-month-old boy he found floating in the water.

Fisherman Gus Hutt was checking his lines off Matata Beach, northeast of Rotorua on New Zealand’s North Island, on October 26 when he noticed the boy in a rip about 7.15am, Stuff.co.nz reports.

Mr Hutt said he initially thought the little boy was a doll.

“I reached out and grabbed him by the arm; even then I still thought it was just a doll,” Mr Hutt said.
“His face looked just like porcelain with his short hair wetted down, but then he let out a little squeak and I thought ‘oh God, this is a baby and it’s alive’.”

Mr Hutt added the boy was “bloody lucky” he chose to check his lines, believing the child could have been pulled away in the rip.

He told his wife Sue about the baby he had saved and she located his parents, who were staying in a nearby holiday camp.

The boy’s mum Jessica Whyte said the camp manager woke her up to news her son had been found floating at sea.

“I don’t think my heart (beat) from hearing that to seeing him. I don’t think my heart worked,” Ms Whyte said.
Luckily, Ms Whyte’s son was OK. It turns out he had unzipped his parents’ tent while they were sleeping and escaped.
However, he was still hospitalised as a precaution.

Mr Hutt said he later followed the little boy’s tracks in the sand down to the water and estimates he wasn’t in the water for very long.

Local fire and emergency authorities advised parents camping with toddlers make sure that zippers are out of reach.
