Thailand's worsening labour supply crisis

Whether considering a high level management appointment or a lower level issue of labour resource, employers in Thailand are facing the most serious shortage of quality labour supply in recent memory. Against this backdrop, the Australian and British chambers of commerce in Thailand recently held a joint breakfast briefing at the J.W. Marriott to ascertain the extent of the problem and to identify potential solutions.
Douglas Whittaker, who established Guardforce in Thailand, chaired the event and was supported by a panel of speakers comprised of Daniel Poole of Santa Fe, Simon Matthews of Manpower Thailand and Gary Woollacott of Opus Recruitment Ltd.
Currently, Thailand is reporting one of the lowest unemployment rates globally with the continuing economic expansion in the country.
This growth is set to continue for the foreseeable future (an increase of 50-60 new hotels in the leisure industry is one clear example.) Hemaraj Land and Development recently announced the purchase of 6,800 rai adjacent to the Eastern Seaboard Estate. There are also signs of development upcountry in both the manufacturing and finance sectors, with expansion in retail banking and personal finance being the main drivers.
As a result, there is an increasing demand on the labour market and employers in Thailand are now witnessing staffing shortages at all levels from operators to executives. Many companies are also suffering from the need to recruit more staff to meet their expansion programmes and this is exacerbated by an increase in staff turnover as employees see enhanced prospects with competitor companies in similar situations.
