In the South?

Post by Pundi64 »

What in the HELL is happening in the South with all the killings, bomings, etc.
This seems to be worse as the days go bye.
Does anyone have any feedback or ideas on this to share?

Pundi64,
You might have taken a bit of time to some reseach before posting.
The "problem" down south had been going on for decades. The PULO (Pattani United Liberation Organisation) have been fighting for separatism ever since the world began. Kashmir is another good example.
The religious element is now heavily involved and basically, there you have it.
I won't forget hearing some backpackers discussing this topic near Mae Hong Song last year. The fact that where they were was about as far away from the trouble as possible and that they they thought Surat Thani was "dodgy", showed about as much political insight in Thailand as dead parrot.

Theres a good story on today's Asia Times Online:

Fear and loathing in the Thai south
TANYONG LIMO, Thailand - From the tea shop that she runs with her husband, Maye Leh surveyed the silence that had descended on the surrounding small houses with cracked walls, shut windows and closed doors on a late Sunday morning.

The only sounds were those of clucking chickens, the twitter of caged birds and the odd breeze that wafts through this village, from which many ethnic Malay-Muslim inhabitants have fled since heavily armed troops poured in to search for people responsible for the killing of two Thai marines last week.

Agree, but have to add NI and Palestine. Each one of these situations has it's own unique story, however ther is one marked similarity in all of them. They were all instigated by Imperialism. British Imperilaism in every case mentioned.

I travel to the deep south often and never come across, or have even seen signs of problems.

To put it in persective: the average death by politically motivated violence in the Deep South has been reported at about two persons per day. The average number of people who die in road accidents in the same three provinces is twelve.

Oh BTW Lomu, I would expect a dead parrot to speak less balls than a BP.

Try this one for starters.

Most people in Hua Hin not think and not have feelings at all.

Maybe you should address this to the Dear Wanderlust topic, the resident agony aunt.

BTW we are not affected by the troubles in Northern Ireland, Palestine or even East Timor at the moment. I am sure that Dr.Dave will alert us all when we need to take up arms.

Sorry Rider but I not understand. Opinionated yes, "Billy Goats Gruff"???,

I can not wait to learn what that is.

Sounds like a Welsh bedtime story to me.

Sorry about the question, but I can read and write English OK but I struggle a bit with regional dialects and English culture.

What do you think about my Vietnamese.

Back on topic,

I do not want another yellow.

The situation is not good but however it is not as bad as NI at it's height or Palestine.

Most Southerners, and I am married to one, are not interested in the violence but accept that something needs to be done.

There are similarities with other internal conflict, most of which are yet unsolved.

The best thing to do, like post Tsunami hit areas, is to go and visit and bring much needed cash into areas that need it.
