Suitcase erupts in flames at airport

A suitcase of a Thai passenger leaving for Cambodia caught fire on the conveyor belt while being loaded on Bangkok Airways Flight PG 931 from Suvarnabhumi airport to Cambodia, caretaker Transport Minister Chadchat Suttipunt said on Tuesday.

According to the report he received, some goods with a phosphorus content, intended for an exhibition in Cambodia, were in the suitcase. It was believed a chemical reaction caused by heat or friction started the fire.

"It was fortunate this happened while the suitcase was not yet loaded on the plane. It would have been very dangerous if the fire broke out while the plane was flying," Mr Chadchat said.

Check-in luggage scanning didn't reveal anything? If I recall S'bhumi bought several of those multi-million dollar detector machines about 5 years back that are supposed to find anything and everything. But alas, I guess it may depend upon the procedures in place.

Bangkok Airways passenger, Pongkarn Kositthammanan, owned the bag that burst into flames at Suvarnabhumi Airport this morning, according to the transport authorities.

Caretaker Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt attributed the flame to the combustion of fertilisers stored in the bag.

It was reported that the bag contained packages of organic fertiliser. It burst into flame while on the baggage conveyor belt.

Rawewan Netrakavesna, the general manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport, said that the fire caused slight damage to the conveyor belt and electronic equipment of the counters near Row F.

Note to self. Having bought 100 KG of nitrate lawn and garden fertiliser last weekend......best check the house insurance policy again

There are some pretty consistently noisy soi dogs that could probably be silenced in this manner but honestly "Guv" it is intended for the garden. But now you draw my intention to it....... :rasta: what's the best mixture???

Google "Nitropril"

There is more to this story than is being made known. For fertiliser to catch fire it had to have something else contacting it. :?

As the expensive scanners don't work, it's only appropriate that Row F is check-in for Fertilisers.
Additional signage should then be: Please Check-bin :tsk:

Hidden D.G in passengers suitcases is a scary thing. From Propane hair devices to lighters to who knows what. The big one right now is lithium batteries.
One word is not a story but it is the beginning and end of one.
