Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
AS far as getting info-- the hotels hate to admit that theyare not busy and exaggerate their numbers. A friend of mine has a Thai wife who is an assistant manager of the room cleaning staff at a 5star hotel. She can tell you any one night what their room occupancies are. Another friend has info about the beer deliveries to bars. These sort of people have the REAL info and according to them things are as low as they have ever known them.

It's all confusing, I hear this, yet when friends stayed at the Centara Grand a couple of weeks back, they couldn't get their usual room, and were lucky to be accommodated at all because the place was so busy.
We visited our friends there a couple of times, and sat around the pool with them. The clientele that we saw were certainly not Chinese tour groups or Indian families - seemed to be predominantly German.

You have to differentiate between the hotels. Branded Hotels cannot and will not exaggerate their occupancy or average rate...how could they? At the end of the month they have to deliver a GOP and what counts is what is in the bank. Not sure about the Guest House, B&B...however what would be the benefit for them?oakdale160 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 07, 2018 10:38 am AS far as getting info-- the hotels hate to admit that theyare not busy and exaggerate their numbers. I have now over 4 years experience and June is always a very, very quiet month for Hua Hin. Same as last year or the year before that. It only picks up on the weekend when BKK comes down. July and August look good with school vacation around the world kicking in and hotels/resorts have quiet a good number on the books already. September along with June are the worst month for Hua Hin. Nothing new, it's been like this ...not more not less.
Cheers,
B.

I tried to book the Wing 5 hotel for last weekend. Was fully booked. I managed to get this Friday, but Saturday is also fully booked.
Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
I don't think we can count Bangkok weekend warriors as 'tourists' - though TAT probably does.
Hua Hin is always rammo at weekends, its virtually a suburb of Bangkok now.

I recently went to Phuket and Pattaya, booked hotels in advance at both locations, I was upgraded in both places as the hotels were full. both places were also extremely busy with I am assuming tourists. Usual bus convoys of Chinese and now Indians on prepaid holidays. Certainly no tourist slump in my opinion except maybe in HH.

Just an observation but recently flew in from a connection in the middle east to Swampy and there were about 60 people on the plane, and about half of them were Thais. I know its low season but its the first time I've flown into Bangkok on an empty international flight!

2017 ..... 35+mill Tourist arrivals. Hard to call that a slump on anyone's ledger.
Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
Hard to believe Thai govt figures either ... over half the population arriving as foreign tourists ... yeah right.

Don't know about elsewhere, but Sodom and Gomorrah was jumping over the weekend just past. Could not book where I usually stay and many other places were advising they were full over the weekend. Don't know why there are so many complaints about the Hua Hin weekend traffic, need to try Pattaya for a better perspective!

Some are so happy, some are unhappy. Some like it when HH is quiet and relatively deserted, others like the bars to be full of girls and tourists. Pattaya has less slumping and more humping. You pays your money and takes your choice.
Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
I guess it all depends on personal situations. I would imagine those on fixed income pensions from overseas would view tourists as a nuisance and not care less about them or the industry. While those (or their partners) trying to generate some income from any business in Thailand related in any way to tourism would welcome them (but not the Chinese) and the high season. The latter group are probably hurting right now.oakdale160 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 25, 2018 10:53 am Some are so happy, some are unhappy. Yes, that describes me perfectly - the fewer the better IMHO.
Even when I was a tourist, I avoided high season.

I had a walk through town down to the fishing pier on the way to the beach this morning and it was impressively relaxed with hardly anyone around, either locals or tourists. Certainly it should suit anyone who liked the place twenty years ago.
There was a photo on that display by the pier restaurants that showed a building nearby in 1984 and it looked virtually the same as it did this morning.

The calm before the storm....National Day Golden Week in China starting October 1st, Thai School Holidays and European Semi-Expats incoming! Our little village will soon be busy enough again!
