I watched them sinking them on Thai news last night, and wondered what was going.
My thoughts were exactly as yours Pete - I was thinking here comes the next oil slick.

A reef is comprised of coral and marine life that grows in symbiosis with it, coral needs clear water and sunlight to proliferate. The waters off Phetburi are worse than those at Hua Hin; murky, silty, and brown. They would have more chance of creating a reef in Prachuap where the water is clearer though I don't for one moment think any scientific thought processes go into these decisions.

Maybe they should put a budget aside to educate Thai''s that fish under a certain size per different species are still jovernial and probably haven't reproduced.
I also dislike the fact that walking in places like the landing pier you see loads of tiddlers that haven't been thrown back in by hobble fisherman and are just left to die in the sun..

I would expect at 12 nm offshore that the water would be somewhat clearer than that we are use to in Hua Hin and its vicinity. I have been at about 7nm offshore and it was remarkably clear. I would prefer to know what depth they have been laid, as this determines growth and for my part divability. (Sic)

I could not agree more but I would challenge you (not that I am throwing down the gaunlet) to find this info in the public arena. As it just happened this info is not know it anyone.B6PTW wrote: I would prefer to know what depth they have been laid, as this determines growth and for my part divability. (Sic)
You think those vessels were "environmentally" scrubbed? Not a chance . . . .

The below chart appears to be Gulf depth soundings in meters. Click on the map to enlarge. You should be able to figure out approximately the depth where dumped given the location description in the BKP article. All other reference states the Gulf has a mean depth of 58 meters, maximum 85. Pete

Note: The reference map is about 17 years old so probably some changes in depth but I wouldn't think drastic changes given the nature of the water flow in the Gulf. If anything it could be shallower in places off of Petchaburi due to the inflow of sediments from the north.
