Visa raids nab 50 foreigners
Fifty foreign nationals were arrested for overstaying their visas and other offences in the latest of a series of coordinated police raids on 87 locations across the country early Saturday.

The raids involving teams of police and officers from other agencies targeted locations in Bangkok and other provinces popular among foreigners. Among them were four international schools, one language school, 33 secondary schools and 49 other sites.

A total of 50 foreigners and one Thai national were arrested, said Pol Maj Gen Surachate Hakparn, deputy chief of the Tourist Police Bureau.

There's always that niggling question ...................................

Was any action taken against the schools for employing there 'criminals'? They must be responsible for background checks, especially the International schools.

If these schools did not employ the illegals, the crime wouldn't happen in the first place. Surely, they need to be cutting the head off this monster.

Absolutely Big Boy, if the schools stopped employing illegal teachers, there would be no illegal teachers. Of course, since foreigners are nothing more than 2nd class citizens at best, it is far better to simply target foreigners only, without making any clear attempt to tackle the root cause of the problem.

While their actions are justified, I don't think it does the school system here much good. I say this on the assumption that many of the illegal teachers have been working for a wage which is less, maybe even considerably less than what legal teachers would be willing to work for.

Most, if not all government run schools in Thailand don't have a big enough budget to pay for legal teachers and all that goes with it.

I wonder how many of the arrested teachers were teaching English? I would guess that most, if not all, were. And, as we all know, when it comes to English, the authorities here are all talk and very little action. I haven't quite worked out why this is. Is it because they really believe Thai will one day be a internationally recognised language, or is it a way of making sure that many well-paid jobs will remain beyond the reach of most working class Thais. After all, the wealthy Thais can send their kids to good schools with English programs and the like, while Somchai on the rice farm has to send his child to a school where he or she will learn no English at all.

By the way, I am not condoning illegal employment. I just believe that Thailand has far more serious issues to worry about other than 50 or so illegal teachers who in any case are unlikely to be much of a burden on the country's economy.

Hundreds and hundreds of policemen involved in raids chasing illegal teachers, but yet they cannot get of their backsides in a bid to make the roads safer.

Anyway, nothing to do with me so rant over.

I'm not bothered whether they employ legal or illegal teachers its their choice. A bit like do they arrest the drug barons or the pushers. Get rid of the barons, and there'd be no drugs to push.

My only concern is proper policing. If the employee is at fault, so is the employer, regardless of the crime. A crime is a crime.

So there are government schools employing people illegally? That doesn't surprise me in the least. I know of an American couple who worked for a school with a royal name, and the agency who employed them wouldn't get them a work permit. They, with permission from the school, had to skip out of the country every 90 days.

I totally agree with Takiap. The government say they want to improve the standard of English, yet put enormous obstacles (and cost) in the way when it comes to legal employment of native speakers. They also come up with ridiculous requirements like the Teacher's Licence. The only option that some schools have is to go the illegal route.

Nicely summed up. Sadly. :(

:-D Teams of police on each of every of 87 locations. With other officers ! How many highly trained officers of the law were on each of the 87 raids ? Other reps as well :D Between them they managed, with the help of their undercover surveillance and infiltration teams, to nab 50 YES 50!!! people getting cash in hand and and spending it in Thailand :banghead:

I know there are plenty of undesirables out there but just think they should be concentrating on them.

The 'schools' in this country are businesses that profit from customers (parents) by offering a marginally better 'education' by employing foreigners with a better command of the language in which the school is pitching it's most expensive service (usually called an EP -"English Program"). The profit margin for a school is more important than it's 'products' (well educated children) so it is natural that they will cut corners when seeking teachers that are not Thai. The government (military dictatorship) doesn't give a hoot whether children are educated or not, but just needs to justify its own existence, part of which involves crackdowns on "outlaw/criminal/terrorist" teachers and blaming them for all of the ill wills of the nation and its benevolent but largely uneducated population.

The irony to this whole fiasco is ironic.

THOUSANDS OF FOREIGNERS TURNED AWAY AT THAI AIRPORTS
More than 3,600 foreigners with criminal records have been arrested at or turned away from five major airports in the first six months of the year, immigration police said Sunday.

In what was described as a national security effort, immigration officers at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Hat Yai international airports arrested 156 foreigners wanted for criminal offenses including those suspected of transnational crimes between January and June, according to police spokesman Col. Choengron Rimpadee.

More than 3,400 foreigners deemed to “pose a risk to public order” were also turned away. Most were from South Asian countries and suspected of trying to enter the country to work illegally, Choengron said.

Good to see the junta has its priorities right in piling resources into the terrorist outlaw teacher scourge sweeping the country - god forbid anyone actually gets an education here.

Dozens of foreigners were arrested early Wednesday when authorities raided 62 areas including schools and hotels nationwide.

At about 2am on Wednesday, Tourist Police Deputy Commissioner Maj. Gen. Surachet Hakpal and officers held a press conference at Nana Plaza on Soi Sukhumvit 4 to announce their arrests as a part of an ongoing operation they’ve called “X-Ray Outlaw Foreigner.” A total of 35 foreigners were arrested and charged various offenses, including illegal entry and overstaying their visas.

Among nine who overstayed their visas are six Indians, one Chinese, one Cameroonian and one German, Surachet said.

The 25 foreigners charged with illegal entry include seven Laotians, five Burmese, five Indians, four Cambodians, one Syrian, one Yemeni, one Egyptian and one Ugandan. One Indian was charged with drug-related offenses.

More whip cracking from 'big joke'. That's right big man, punish those nasty underpaid overworked outlaw Burmese immigrants for endangering Thai society.

IMMIGRATION CHIEF VOWS CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL FOREIGN WORKERS
Police arrested dozens of foreigners Thursday for illegally working in Thailand as the newly-appointed immigration chief promised a tough crackdown.

Moving on from his almost-weekly ritual of rounding up foreigners overstaying their visas, Maj. Gen. Surachet Hakpan today said 59 people – Thais and foreigners – accused of being involved in illegal employment were arrested in the capital’s Nana area and Khaosan Road.

Thirty-five of those arrested were Burmese. There were also six stateless people, five Chinese, four Bangladeshis and a few from Syria, Egypt, Pakistan, Nigeria and Palestine. Four Thais were charged with illegally employing foreign nationals.

The foreigners would be revoked of their resident permits and deported, according to Surachet, who officially took over the commanding position Monday at the Immigration Bureau.
