The head of the investigative committee examining the legality of ten Hua Hin hotels believed to be operating illegally has said that five will be served with closure notices.

Somporn Patchimpetch said that loopholes in the law had meant that the ten suspected hotels had been continue to operate over the last two months.

However, the fate of five of them have now been decided and they will have closure notices posted on the front of them. These hotels originally applied to be just residential premises but later changed to operate as regular hotels offering daily rooms.

This was against the law and also their documentation has been found to be false after false documents were presented. No mention was made in the Manager story about the possible connivance of officials in issuing the bogus licences. Five other hotels are still under investigation.

Manager did not name the hotels in their story but said the five would be shut according to Article 44 of building regulations dating back to 1979.

One of the previously named places is across the road from me, and there's no notice posted yet - I'll keep watching, and report if something gets posted.

Be interesting to see how they would classify a 'homestay' place that a lot of the locals are running.

Also, if they backdate residences that were later 'converted' to hotels, a lot of the hotels would have to close. Baiyoke 1 in Pratunam, for one. I was staying there for a while almost thirty years ago, then suddenly all residents of the apartments were served a notice stating they were becoming a hotel. Rents went up 300% so everyone basically got out.

Two hundred Illegal hotels apply for amnesty
Talknewsonline reported a local official as saying that more than 200 hotels had applied for an amnesty to continue operating in Hua Hin.

Regulations issued by the Interior Ministry on June 12th gave operators of illegal hotels nationwide until September 9th - next Monday - to apply for an amnesty that will last through until August 2021.

Jirawat Phramanee of the Hua Hin municipality said that more than 200 illegal and unregistered establishments had so far applied for the amnesty.

It is understood that such establishments will have two years to comply fully with the regulations or face being shut down for good.
