Not forced. The boys chose to spend the time in a Wat as a way of giving thanks and as a fulfillment of Buddhist life. You need to spend more time with Thais too understand them and their way of life.
I don’t think he even understands himself, let alone the life of a Buddhist.

I refer to the official informations, those boys did not express the wish to be ordained. The decision came from officials.

Candles and chanting: cave boys begin monk ordination ceremony

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... n-ceremony

Eleven boys from the “Wild Boars” soccer team - rescued from the flooded Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district in a drama that gripped global audiences - took their first steps on Tuesday to be ordained as Buddhist novices in a ceremony steeped in tradition.

The occasion was broadcast live on Facebook by local authorities and starts a process whereby the boys will live for nine days in a Buddhist temple - a promise made by their families in thanks for their safe return and in memory of one rescuer who died.

Nine Australians awarded bravery medals for cave rescue

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

CANBERRA: Nine Australians involved in rescuing 12 boys and their soccer coach from the Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai province were awarded bravery medals on Tuesday for putting their lives in danger during the treacherous ordeal.

Anaesthetist Richard Harris and his dive buddy Craig Challen, a retired veterinarian, were awarded the Star of Courage, the second highest civilian bravery decoration in the Australian honours system after the Cross of Valor, Governor-General Peter Cosgrave said in a statement.

Six police and a navy diver received the lesser Bravery Medal.

Dr Harris and Dr Challen, both 53-year-old experienced cave divers, had displayed conspicuous bravery in the operation that resulted in all 13 members of a soccer team being rescued, their citations said.

The team entered the cave on June 23, but flooding quickly blocked the exit and they had to retreat further inside the cave. Heavy rains raised water levels and thwarted the initial searches before two British divers on July 2 found the group huddled on a dry patch of ground, safe but hungry.

Dr Harris and Dr Challen arrived at the cave on July 6 and reached the team the next day.
"Dr Harris conducted initial medical assessments and was able to provide information to the awaiting authorities regarding the safest extraction methods,'' the citations said.

"The rescue mission was hazardous, with poor or zero visibility, debris and constrictive passageways, variable air quality, and made more difficult with further rainfalls predicted,'' they added.

Dr Harris sedated the boys and coach before they were taken out by divers over three days, concluding July 10.
Dr Challen helped remove the team's masks and wetsuits as the boys and coach were stretchered through dry places then he prepared them for their next dive through flooded sections of the cave, his citation said.

The other seven Australian divers displayed considerable bravery throughout the cave system helping move the team to the entrance, their citations said.
"The threat of sudden flooding, movement of debris and deterioration of air quality posed continuous, potentially fatal hazards to all personnel in the cave system,'' their citations said.

The dangers were brought home by one death during the long rescue operation, former Thai navy Seal Lt Cdr Saman Gunan, who died while replenishing supplies inside the cave.

The 12 boys and coach recovered for a week in a hospital.

Dr Challen told a reporter in his hometown of Perth that he had not expected the rescue to be such as success.
"It was absolutely life and death. We didn't expect to be getting 13 people out of there alive,'' Dr Challen told News Corp.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had backed the fast-tracking of official recognition for the Australians' bravery.
"It's one of the most heroic and inspiring episodes of our time,'' Mr Turnbull said a day after the rescue was completed.

Ashes of ex-Seal Saman scattered on Mekong River

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

NAKHON PHANOM: The ashes of ex-Seal Saman Gunan, who died in the operation to rescue the 12 Wild Boar Academy football players and their coach from Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai province, were scattered in the Mekong River in a ceremony on Sunday morning.

The ceremony was held in the middle of the Mekong River in front of the Indochina Market in Nakhon Phanom Municipality, and was chaired by Nakhon Phanom governor Somchai Witdamrong.

Eleven young Moo Paa Academy footballers and the coach, who were all ordained into the monkhood last week in Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district, were present at the ceremony.
Mrs Waleeporn, wife of the late ex-Seal member Saman, and her relatives were also at the ceremony.

The 11 Wild Boars, their coach, Mrs Waleeporn and her relatives were all taken in a Mekong Riverine Unit boat to the middle of the Mekong River, where Lt Cdr Saman's ashes were scattered according to local tradition.

Mrs Waleeporn said she chose the Mekong River as the site for scattering the ashes because her late husband loved the river and she herself is a native of Nakhon Phanom. Moreover, the town is where she and Lt Cdr Saman first met 15 years ago, she said.

The ceremony was watched from the bank by a large number of people.
Lt Cdr Saman passed out and died while diving as part of the part of the rescue operation in the cave on June 6.

I heard one of the British rescuers say that the success of the mission is in many ways down to Mr Gunan's death. It convinced the authorities that they had to act immediately on an extraction, something the rescuers had had difficulty in getting across to the authorities before he died.

May he rest in peace.
