Thailand has long been an example of "Bamboo diplomacy"—swaying with the wind to stay safe in a world dominated by bigger powers.
This week, it fulfilled China's demand to deport dozens of Uyghurs Muslims who had taken refuge there despite appeals from the United States and an outcry from human rights groups who feared they would be tortured if sent back.
The significance of the move stretches beyond Asia as decades of a U.S.-championed liberal world order—already increasingly challenged by China, Russia and other authoritarian powers—crumbles under President Donald Trump.
"The liberal agenda is in tatters unless the EU can do more," former Thai lawmaker and ambassador Kobsak Chutikul told Newsweek.

The US and Japan have warned their citizens of a possible terrorist attack in Thailand after 40 Uyghur refugees, who had been held at the Immigration Detention Center in Suan Phlu for over a decade, were deported to China.
The US Embassy noted that similar deportations have led to violent attacks in the past, including the 2015 bomb attack at the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok, which killed 20 people and injured 125. The shrine was targeted due to its popularity with Chinese visitors.
The embassy advised US citizens to exercise extra caution, especially in crowded places, and to review their personal security plans.
The Japanese Embassy also urged Japanese citizens in Thailand to stay alert, particularly near tourist attractions, event venues, restaurants, hotels, shopping centers, public transportation, and religious sites, where large crowds could be targeted by terrorists.
