The Phuket property nightmare (Could be anywhere)
Re: The Phuket property nightmare (Could be anywhere)
Guys
This could be anywhere in South East Asia, he obviously made the wrong choice with his wife, which is very unfortunate, i have been married to my Thai wife for 15 years and trust her more than i trust myself.
There was a high profile case in Australia where an Aussie millionaire married a Filipina, things went well for the first 10 years, they had a few kids, then things soured, he wanted a divorce, she ended up hiring 4 guys to slit his throat and dump his body in the countryside.
I know which guy i would rather be:)

Similar (or worse) has happened many times over in Hua HIn.
Over the top?
A friend (not close - but a friend all the same) was given that as his 'send off'.
Where is his murderer?
On last reports, I believe she still runs a bar down Bintha-butt.
Being 'potless', as you are, does have some advantages.
You'll never be in a position, on current form, to invite envy.

Re: The Phuket property nightmare (Could be anywhere)
GLCQuantum I agree with you, this is a serious issue both within Pattaya, Hua Hin and all over Thailand.
When some woman, see that with a bit of help from bent lawyers and officials, they can literally get away with murder and all, or most of the money.
I met the woman in the case from 2004 and my wife said to me at the time, that she did not like her. Seems her instinct was correct. A shame that some men lack the same level of that particular 6th sense.
As Buksida said, Caveat emptor.

I agree and from quite recent first hand knowledge and experience, there still seems to be a steady supply of 'victims'.Khundon1975 wrote:GLCQuantum I agree with you, this is a serious issue both within Pattaya, Hua Hin and all over Thailand.
I can only assume the infatuation and attention clouds all judgement and of course the lack of research.
Sad but true and there is also the family involvement and the willing hangers on prepared to lend a helping hand in various ways. When some woman, see that with a bit of help from bent lawyers and officials, they can literally get away with murder and all, or most of the money.
Accidents happen, people disappear and they are rarely investigated fully where farangs are involved, especially when you're out in the sticks somewhere with little or no contact with other farangs.
It seems the riches involved is worth the sacrafice in many cases.
Sounds quite ominous but the stats are quite alarming when researched and some of the tales of woe we know about barely even make the headlines.
As we also well know, there are stories of the complete opposite, it's not all doom and gloom.
It certainly is, in every aspect. As Buksida said, Caveat emptor.
Whether it's a property or the love of a young bar girl

Stories of women stealing their husbands' riches happen the world over, but perhaps not so fraudulently. I truly feel sorry for them but some principles are required when living here. Never buy a property and always rent. Even if you rent that property for twenty years, its still cheaper than purchasing and no hassles or worries. Keep your assets in your own country and that way the woman you marry/live with will never have the chance of stealing them from you. We are a guest here - nothing more, nothing less

I hate that over used phrase. We are not guests by any stretch of the imagination.

Can't say I hate it, but I agree it's overused and very inaccurate.
Tourists are guests, those of us who stick it out long term should be given some kind of international perseverance award!
I'm not really complaining, but it's human nature to want to feel appreciated from time to time. I jump through so many hoops every year I get dizzy!
If I'd been a foreigner working this long in the UK, I'd have had permanent residence years ago.

This is the way

So what the what would the two fellows in this article say. They were here for ten years, had Thai wives and children but still seemed to have been treated as 'guests' who could be used by lawyers, the police and others to line there own pockets.HHTel wrote:"We are a guest here - nothing more, nothing less"

What would you term yourself as a longer timer in this country?
Re: The Phuket property nightmare (Could be anywhere)
Expats are residents in a sense and as DM says, we jump through many hoops each year in order to abide by the ever changing rules. We are here under sufferance.
Tell me. How do you treat your guests?

You're right it does happen the world over but i would wager not as easily and openly as it seems to do in Thailand.TicTac wrote:Stories of women stealing their husbands' riches happen the world over, but perhaps not so fraudulently. I feel sorry for the victims in general but some are so stupid, it's hard to sympathise to much.
Also agree with the property and money side of things.
By renting, you can always move on at short notice if required and your money is definitely safer and easier control in your own country.
The 'guest' part that seems to upset so many does have it's merits.
Will a foreigner ever really be truly appreciated or valued for what they do or contribute to Thailand.
Unless it's money related probably not.

I agree that people staying long term are residents in a sense and I know of the many hoops that have to be jumped through.
But like I said, are you really appreciated and accepted as a citizen of Thailand? or just viewed as a long term guest/tourist?

Re: The Phuket property nightmare (Could be anywhere)
"people" who come to Thailand are granted "permission to stay". the period of time you can stay varies from a few weeks to a year. with a few exceptions, that is it.
you must meet the requirements very time you ask for permission to stay. every year or reporting period.
until you die.
you don't get asked how long you have lived here. they don't care and it does not matter. you have no rights. nothing is granted to you. it is that way by design. they are smart.
my only hope is to be left alone and only have to go to immigration four days a year. if that.
you are not a guest. YOU ARE THE HOST of the parasite. it is your responsibly to manage your parasite.
anyway, back to the latest story about a man who got all his money stolen from a Thai woman...
case number 7,459,762.

I've been coming here for 21 years, have lived here for 12. Have a Thai mum (since I was 11), a Thai step-sister, two half-Thai sisters and a father who must have contributed 20-30 million baht into the economy during his term.
Yet, I'm still merely a 'farang'. No perks. Just put up with.
