Bringing Dogs to Thailand from the UK

Just a quick note, I have recently brought my 3 dogs over to Hua Hin from the UK (fairly large dogs) and I was given a quote of just under £4000 for this service, so I phoned Lufthansa and they said I could fly them as excess baggage which I did, this cost me £734 a big saving on nearly 4k, on arriving at Bangkok the animal quarantine people checked the documents etc for the dogs and that cost me 60baht per dog, I then proceeded to customs, they looked at the dogs and shrugged their shoulders, then said I would have to pay 1000baht per dog, which I did, so if any of you are thinking of bringing your pets over do not use these companies that specialise in transporting pets as they only do what I did and charge thru the nose for it, phone round the airlines and see what they will charge you.

We are preparing a similar exercise to bring 2 dogs from the Netherlands in November and we compared the costs of several airlines, which fly directly from Amsterdam to Bangkok.
KLM charges € 200,- per dog. (max 75 Kg.)
China airlines and Eva air charge € 63,- per kilo as excess baggage.
Se we decided to book with KLM.

Question: We have heard about the cost for the quarantine from the Department of Lifestock Development, but why you had to pay 1000 baht for the customs?

I work for a freight airline and whilst the company I work for uses handling agents, I know a couple of people that I meet on the aircraft from time to time that specialize in transporting animals and their companies maintain stables and kennels near airports and provide vets and people to accompany the animals or meet them and they're basically for transporting high value animals like race horses, rare pedigree dogs or zoo animals and are a bit beyond what is required to fly your pet dog to Thailand.
(They even have a genuine Texan cowboy who flys around with horses and strides off the aircraft wearing hand-tooled boots and a large belt buckle going "Howde y'all" like John Wayne! )

Why bring a dog into Thailand at all? The sois are full of them. Just take your pick!

Apparently it is the customs and excise duty that is payable and they estimated it to be 1000baht per dog

Forgot to add, there was no quarantine period we took the dogs straight out of the airport and home.

Including:

Thai regulations state that animals must be placed in quarantine for at least 30 days at approved premises at the owner's expense. However, the Royal Thai Consulate in Hull, England explains on its website that "Feedback which we have received from other travellers indicates that pet dogs and cats are not usually quarantined".

I imagine quarantine is usually related to rabies, which Thailand already has.

Mrs. B has already called the DLD, because we were worried, that we had to leave our dogs behind for 30 days, when entering Thailand.
The officer of the DLD explained that the quarantine area is already full with all kinds of animals, which enter Thailand.
So they allow accompanied pets with proof of vaccination, to be quarantined at home or in a hotel.
