My dogs have had the rabies jab (and a booster, i think?!) but I've never received a metal tag. They do put the sticker from the vial onto a vaccination book we have for each dog.

Agree...The only time my dog got a metal tag was after it's 1st vaccination as a puppy. That tag lasted about 4 hours on her collar. Following that a yearly sticker in her "passport".

.... if you have dogs you need to keep them inside your property.[/quote]

Dogs are territorial and I find it's better to let our pet dogs form a pack with the neighbours dogs who then keep the area free of strays. To be honest, that's the main reason for having dogs in Thailand, so that you get welcomed home by wagging tails and not snarling teeth.

I believe we still get the tags where I am each year. I'll look in the dog's basket and take a pic of one if in there. Pete

EDIT: Yeah, I found them. They seem to be produced by the drug company, Pfizer. One says Rabies 2010-2011 and the others a different color with a Thai word on it. When the better half gets home I'll ask her to translate.

The Thai is roughly ... Rock Sue-nack Baa ('disease dog mad ') for the common term 'Rabies' or for the technical term 'Hydrophobia' it's Rock Glue-a Nam ('disease afraid [of] water').

I was looking up Frank's 'sue-nack - dog' and discovered that another Thai word for dog is apparently (at least according to Google) 'puan', which also means friend. So a dog really is a Thai's best friend...

^ Never seen/heard that one. Or could it be dog as in http://onlineslangdictionary.com/meanin ... on-of/dog/? Also wouldn't be surprised if ”dog” is used in Thai youth slang. I don't recommend trying it though - most Thais don't like being called or compared to dogs. Woof :tsk:

We get ours vaccinated against a whole host of things, rabies included, once a year and did wherever I've lived.

Okay, the smaller different coloured tags do say "rabies" in Thai, and they are issued by the drug company, Pfizer. The stickers in the books shown are the official labels from the vaccine vile I am told. So, there appears to be no gov. reg. concerning a rabies collar tag....they're just an extra in case you want to put it on their collar. Pete

Food aside, I've spent close to three thousand baht on one of my adopted street dogs due to medical issues. She had a bloody great big bubble coming out her backside one time. The local noodle sellers also chipped in the other two thousand or so baht to get her better.

At the end of the day though, she ('Zero' - the girl) is still a street dog. I think a cull of ALL street dogs, though harsh, would be an improvement for the country.

The majority of street dogs, including my two dogs are dirty, tick ridden feral animals. Though over the last three years I've spent a significant amount of money on them, I wouldn't bat an eyelid were they to be 'erased' - they're street dogs.

^ Whoa GLC, you've got some issues there. You saved one or more, but you wouldn't bat an eyelid if they were done in? I think not. You're more of a softy than you're letting on, and you're just frustrated that the dog problem never seems to end. If you spent the money on them with your salary, you've got a heart.

I'm not unlike you in that I want solutions to things immediately. Seldom happens but you learn to control the frustration over time. If you don't your BP will kill you here. Pete

When you come to understand that you, literally, have no say in the matter, it's easier to deal with when the inevitable happens. Unless you take it/them in (which, if I had a proper home rather than an apartment, I would) you don't have much right to complain when they kick the bucket. Should have taken 'em in if you liked them that much.

I guess it would be safe to assume there is nothing like an animal control group the government has set up? Doesn't sound like Harry, my Border Collie, wound fit in. Way to friendly.

It´s not too long ago H.M. the King of Thailand visited a soi and praised Hua Hin for its good care of soi dogs. My memory may fail me, correct me if I am wrong.

Now this is fergotten and the dogs are out in the open again. Business as usual.

I consider soi dogs to be a nuisance, a serious danger to children and MoCy riders, and possibly spreading diseases.

They have no natural enemies and can therefore breed uncontrolably.

Soi dogs perform no useful task in the environment.

As long as li´l ole ladies and misunderstood soft-hearted do-gooders continue to feed them they will continue to breed like rats.

I do not condone random poisoning. But I believe the city should make a serious effort to remove them.
Does Hua Hin City have a dog catcher at all?

Dogs represent attractive, healthy and nutrituous protein additives for poor people in need in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Don´t kill them (the dogs that is). Export them. Khmers and Viets know how to appreciate a good hounddog stew.

There used to be a government agency that dealt with the problem of soi dogs.

There would be announcement on the tannoy system for everyone to keep their dogs in and that evening the Ampur would go round the streets with baited meat and kill all the stray dogs and take the carcasses away. It was very effective.

Sometime in 2002/2003 an English woman who visited Thailand for a holiday wrote a letter to someone (coughs!) and soon the dog squad was disbanded. She now lives in the rabies free UK while children here get their faces ripped off every day.

Having just checked it seems she's also tried the same thing in Sri-Lanka but then decided it was best to bring rabies to the UK so she wouldn't have to leave her home to annoy people - bloody social workers - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/1904304 ... it-me.html
