The Grandparent experience

Do others share my feeling--its difficult to connect with young grandchildren--- the iPads and the children's total devotion to them makes it difficult.

Parents also have the same problem, however as a grandparent it is often harder to discipline the younglings as they're not yours!

With the stupid amount of time schools close here for summer it is a challenge and a full time job keeping the kids off these devices.

My son gets some time on the iPad in the evening otherwise its off limits and he knows it. When he is on it he has access to learning apps, abc, puzzles, drawing, nursery rhymes etc. (You can define access in settings).

During the day we go swimming, play with play doh (his favourite), drawing (chalk, finger paint, crayons etc).

Or we go out, floating markets, market villa, etc. I think there is plenty of things to do with kids. Although i admit it is a full job, but a nice job.

....Now back to fighting a battle with nap time.

I paid extra and my step-son is back at his boarding school in Khorat already, there they confiscate the phone for three months if they get caught using it when they shouldn't!

Perhaps some parents/grandparents use these devices as babysitters. My son and daughter spend leisure time with their kids and use gadgets in a disciplinary way and limit there use. Having said that, before we had children I was horrified with the amount of time other people let their kids watch tv, when ours came along Saturday/Sunday mornings gave us an extra half hour in bed when cartoons were on.
