What i am always wondering about is why they they are always searching for "native speakers"?
I think that people who had to learn English as a foreign language and speak fluently are more competent than people who ask you "got toim?".
And they had to learn the grammar to understand it as well as the vocabulary.

I most likely agree with you. However, most parent insist on a caucasian from UK, USA, Canada or Australia. We have met many excellent Filipino teachers with great credentials but the parent will not accept.

Could go on about this but I think you understand this Thai parental attitude.

H/t how about Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Malaya (malaysia), Hong Kong, Burma, Pakistan (parts of), Fiji, West Indies (sort of English mahn), Ireland, Wales Scotland, Cook Islands, PNG/Solomons (risky one there), Sth Africa et bloddy cetera.
My God it makes one's heart jump with joy to see the spread of English in the far flung corners of the world. I remember a skit with Alf Garnet extolling the virtues of the Empire - bluudy hilarious.
However I did note 1 dissident on the BBC news several days back clearly identifiable by his 3 day old beard and his sign invoking "down with English" - this at an anti American rally in downtown Tehran!
And how about Terry Thomas - yuerh a right shaahhh! Not to mention Sergeant "shut up" (yuerh a bunch of pooofs) in it ain't half hot!
:D

This is actually very true; when I lived in Jakarta I used to refer all questions about the English language to my Dutch friend who had become an English teacher after first emigrating to Australia.
He was apparently a very competent teacher.

i've never heard any 'native' english speakers ever say 'got toim' :? :? except maybe a 3/4 year old
you must be privileged :thumb:

i doubt any 'native speaking' english teachers would mutter this & i'm sure as competence goes, they too would have had to learn the grammar as well as the vocabulary

i presume you checked his passport & papers for authenticity??

i have a fairly accurate idea how my fellow countrymen speak & using one incident in phuket town is hardly a good basis to judge the competence of english speaking natives, is it??
