It's easy to check the likely cause (tofu), and then the remedies.

Soybean products, notably the unfermented variants like tofus, are goitrogenic foods. There are many others, such as cassava, cabbage, kahle, mustard leaf, etc. that are widely used in Thai cuisine, and thus contribute to the problem. Goitrogenic substances interfere with thyroidal functions to cause insomnia, anxiety, overweight, etc.

The Japanese regularly eat ginger and turmeric (in curry) let alone seaweeds having high iodine content that counteract goitrogenics. Try some extra and see if that solves the issue. As for MSG, it caused drowsiness (instead of insomnia) in some reported cases, so also might be helpful.

Last night was Japanese night this week and the problem was not the tofu as I had none, but used soy sauce. Little if any sleep, disgusted and up after 3 hours. Noticed some minor lip swelling last night. Perhaps not the first time but never noticed it before and was alert to it because of one of the posts above.

Anyway, next test in a week or so is no tofu and no soy sauce, but raw salmon. How I'm going to enjoy that with no soy sauce I don't know. Maybe layer wasabi between two pieces like a sandwich?

If it turns out to be the raw salmon and any chemicals within, cooking must get rid of whatever it is as I sleep like a baby after a cooked salmon dinner regardless of cooking style. Go figure. :? Pete

To be honest, I have never yet managed to figure out a reason why people eat tofu in the first place. I realize that it provides a source of protein for vegans, but if you are not a vegan, why eat tofu? The bits of tofu that you often find in Thai soups and etc. have about as much taste as a mouthful of water.

Soy milk is another puzzle for me because in my mind it tastes awful, like you have been chewing on a piece of paper or something.

Also, soy and as such, all soy based products contain a substance/compound which can mimic estrogen, the main female sex hormone. This is proven fact which is common knowledge among researchers.

Anyway Pete, if soy is the culprit for your sleeplessness, I am sure there are other ways to enjoy your salmon. Alternatively, just forget about the salmon and order something else. :D

Personally, I'd rather tuck into a big "real" burger; BBQ ribs;a steak, or better still, a plate stacked with lamb chops.

You're right, Tofu by itself is a tasteless substance. The Japanese serve it many different ways though and it can be very tasty and a normal side dish with a Japanese meal. Pete

Try Bragg's liquid Aminos, made from soy but a different process & 1/2 the sodium. Available from Villa.
