Never a truer word........

Stopped and have not touched a cigarette in 12 years. The LHG gave me a choice, cigarettes or...... well, the choice concentrated the mind, put it that way..... I certainly wanted to give up!!

Used to smoke 20 or so a day, but double that when out on the beer on the weekend...... started at 15 years old, and smoked for 15 more.

A fairly obscure (and slightly dangerous) way of quitting, but assured by a good friend it worked and was the way to go......

Go out and get cabbaged - mix your drinks and smoke at every opportunity...... chain if you can. I was finished for 3-4 days, never felt like touching a drink or a cigarette for a week. They say if you can do the week, you're over the worst and go from there.

Whatever anyone says regarding the method..... it was 1 night only and it certainly worked for me. Believe me, I'm far better off.

Smoked for 15 years and just went cold turkey one day as woke up and looked at the empty bottle of vodka plus two packs of B&H and decided that was it....I want live. That was five years ago and haven't touched one since but you need to have a good reason to quit to give you the motivation (mine was to live longer and not leave the Mrs alone). The patches and all that stuff are gimmicky rubbish........if you want to do it enough and are motivated thus towards this end, then it isn't too bad.

Don't get me wrong, not one of these 'holier than thou' ex-smokers, I enjoyed every minute of it and still consider myself as non smoking smoker.

Good luck.....some find it easy to stop and some have a mare. Do what makes you feel OK and steel yourself.

Don't buy into the 'It's too hard' thinking section and cave-in......be steely and full of character.

I gave up smoking about 10years + ago. I did have to stop drinking too in order to give up, I found they went hand in hand. I think the only way is "cold turkey" yes, painful but does get easier after the first month.
I now can have a drink without wanting to smoke, but not to excess. 8)

Nicrette patches and chews etc are a waste of time...only prolongs the agony.

Worth doing...keep it up

i've tried in the past and so far failed. Tried champix but it just didn't work for me!!
What really bugs me is i can do 3 hours in heathrow,9 to Mumbai, another 2 hours getting the connecting flight,3 and a half to bkk and another getting out of the airport and it just dosent bother me. I'm eating, drinking, sleeping and suffering with boredom. all the things that usually make me wan't to light up but it just dosen't matter because i know i can't have one. As soon as i see the airport exit,i need a fag like my life depended on it!!! Just because i can!!!! I stand there puffing away completely aware of this but does it stop me???? No and its just crazy!!!

I did not have any real problem with side effects apart from the exotic and erotic dreams that they warn you about over the 5 weeks I was taking Champix. My brother did have further problems which caused his heart to race.
I think it is available here under the American product name which is similar and you will find it on Google.
What I did like is that it was not a subsitute for the cigeretts but it took the need to smoke away.

It worked fine for me, but not for others.

Thankfully we are not all the same.

Surgeon said to my father, who was having problems walking...

"Stop smoking".
"Impossible. I've been smoking since I was 14".
"No problem", said the surgeon. "We'll start with your toes and work our way up".

He stopped the next day.

All of us can stop if the motivation is strong enough. I programmed myself "If I can stop for 2 days, I can stop for good". Chain-smoked until my throat was raw and it was physically impossible for me to smoke a cigarette. Daft, if you think about it. Never smoked again, although had some cravings. That was 25 years ago.

Some people shouldn't stop. If they are super-stressed and smoking calms them down, then a smoke is keeping them stable. Deal with the underlying cause first, then stopping is much easier.

Part of the difficulty is we tell ourselves stopping is difficult. Try telling yourself it is easy. Like a computer, the mind can be programmed.

Or do what most do. Play Russian Roulette and wait for serious illness to decide for you. A trip to a cancer ward is a powerful motivator.

Stopped with the help of chemist in the UK and by using Champix.
Was amazed how quickly my carbon levels in my lungs went down to almost zero and the cash in my pocket went up by over £4000.00 in the first year.
I still enjoy a little passive smoking but do not feel the urge to light up again.
Started smoking when I moved to Thailand 7 years ago. Stupidest thing I ever did.

I smoke less than a pack a day, but it's still too much. When I'm on the beer I can somehow manage 2 packs. My 48 year old friend here just had a heart attack, and was told it is directly from smoking. He went from 3 packs a day to being a non smoker.Scared the hell out of him and myself as well.

I have thought of using Champix, but am concerned about possible side effects. Did you have any problems from this drug? How long did you take it for? Did it reduce craving for cigs? Do you know if it is available here?
I did it the other way round and stopped on my first day arriving here - 2.5 years now - just came here and did it Gai Yen - because I dont know how to say cold turkey in thai

Here's some older threads on the subject to review. I've failed miserably quitting several times. This thread is giving me motivation again though. :D Pete

Slightly surprised a the low numbers who have never smoked. My father probably did me the biggest favour when he forced me to smoke a cigarette at age 7, straight off, after being a bit smart arsed and asking him for one. It put me off hard enough, and long enough to get through that growing-up-peer-pressure period unscathed, when all the other kids at school were behind the bike-sheds trying it - and getting addicted.
Had enough of the trolls. Going to sleep. I may be some time....

I can stop quite easily when I'm busy at work, it's when I have a beer I struggle, I can smoke 20 easily in an afternoon/evening when I'm drinking.

I've got a couple of duty free packs left which should last the weekend then I'm going to try give them up, £7 ish in England now, they can stick that.

That's over 2k a year.
