Yes the vaccine has been approved by MEXICO. The price has not been set. They have been working on this for more than 20 years, so it ain't going to be cheap!

Whilst trials so far indicate the vaccine will cover The 4 most common strains of dengue I wonder how effective it will be in S.E Asia, in particular, Thailand. Given the cost of development one would hope governments will subsidise the vaccine and further development in countries where dengue is an issue.

I read the report. The absolute protection rate is only 65% ( that's OK if you are in the 65%) BUT they claim that it moderates the attacks and they do not progress to the fatal Dengue Hemorrhagic fever.

I read one comment by a WHO person who said that the tragedy is that the cost is so high that the vaccines do not get to the people who most need it.

I'm sure your wives and girlfriends have been following this story closely. The guy has the worst hemorrhagic strain and is still in critical condition. They amputated a foot as well.

a friend got dengue fever last june and she was kept in Bangkok hospital, hua hin, for 3 days. she recovered and was very weak for about a month. use personal bug spray when out at night.

She is one of the lucky ones. 9 year old daughter of son in laws family passed away as a result of Dengue in Bangkok a month ago following 10 days of best available hospital treatment , thought she was on the mend, had a seizure and was unable to be revived. DEET vs Dengue, rather take the risks of long term side effects of DEET. much better odds!

Glad your friend has recovered, but Dengue fever carrying mosquitoes generally attack during the day!

Typically the mosquitoes bite in early morning and evening, but can bite at any time. Dengue on Wikipedia.

Oneof the most interesting pieces of research is being done in Aus and elsewhere. It is only OLDER mosquitoes that bite (and only females). They are infecting the mosies with a virus that shortens their life so that they hope that there will be no old mosies.

Dengue last week next door here in Bangkok. Spraying going on today and over the next week.
It's around. Just hope it doesn't get worse.
I'm paranoid as I've been bit a few times in the morning and daytime.

There is no doubt that sooner or later there will be ZIKA infections in THAI. Initially there will be denial of course.
We have the mosquito here already and travellers have taken it to some European countries already
I can see as a secondary effect that International travel may be down. Public Health authorities in non-affected countries will advise pregnant and those planning PG not to go toaffected countries and that will have a general downturn.

We have mosquito nets at home which work good most of the time. Last night though one mossie slipped under my son's net and bit him. Luckily it bit him only once.

A year ago in europe the same happened but the one mossie bit him several times all over! My wife destroyed the mossie when she found it.

PS, i thought there were already a few reports of Zika in thailand? Perhaps travellers who were abroad?
