Maybe not such a bad loss to the American Team. Tiger's Ryder Cup record is not that great and the former captains have struggled to find a suitable partner for him. Maybe he's just not a team player.

"Tiger Woods’ End

The golf legend finally spills his soul. This is not a good thing.
By Jim Newell

Tiger Woods has begun to do what golf fans have demanded for years: to be honest with himself and with us, and to give more insight into what he thinks and feels beyond the typical hackneyed sound bite one offers the Golf Channel following a tournament round. He is no longer denying where his game is, which is lost, or pretending that his 2009 sex scandal never happened or that it didn’t have a big impact on his life.

Tiger Woods is finally coming clean, and doing so with humility and introspection. It is awful.

Last week, Woods acknowledged for the first time publicly that his best days may be behind him. Speaking at a press conference to mark the start of the Hero World Challenge, a small-field event Woods hosts but couldn’t play in this year because his body is broken, the 14-time major champion said that there is no “timetable” for his return from the latest back surgeries he underwent in September and October. “Where is the light at the end of the tunnel? I don’t know,” he told reporters. “There’s really nothing I can look forward to, nothing I can build towards.” When asked how he spends his time, he explained that he takes walks and has become “really good at playing video games. Really good. I swear, that’s basically how I pass a lot of my time.” Woods described any other achievements that he may, against all odds, rack up on the course from here on out as “gravy.” That’s an excellent state of mind for him to be in. But it’s just an incredibly unpleasant one for golf fans to accept. The truth hurts.

Shortly after this press conference, Time published a wide-ranging interview with Woods to mark his 40th birthday later this month. It’s difficult to describe the wobbly sensation in my fingers as I type “wide-ranging interview with Woods,” so unfamiliar is the phrase. The rare and fascinating conversation offered both additional insight into the non-existent status of his game and commentary from the man himself on the Scandal, the sequence of events following his sex scandals and split with his wife that unfolded across tabloid covers for months around this time six years ago. Aside from a perfunctory apology his agents and PR handlers ordered him to give addressing the Scandal in 2010, Woods’ public posture ever since toward “all that” had been to act as though it never happened.

Though he has no intention of ever officially retiring—golfers rarely do—he has “reconciled” himself to the possibility that he may never be able to truly compete again. “Anyone I’ve ever talked to who has had procedures like I’ve had, they say the same thing: you don’t know,” he explained. “With a joint, you know. With a nerve, you just don’t know.” He says that he’s come to realize “now” that getting to “have a life with [his] kids” is “more important than golf,” something that he wasn’t so sure about a few years ago. His relationship with his ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, has recovered—“She’s one of my best friends”—and he explained that he’s softly begun to tell his children about what transpired so they don’t discover all the sordid information themselves via Google:

I’ve taken the initiative with the kids, and told them up front, “Guys, the reason why we’re not in the same house, why we don’t live under the same roof, Mommy and Daddy, is because Daddy made some mistakes.” I just want them to understand before they get to Internet age and they log on to something or have their friends tell them something. I want it to come from me so that when they come of age, I’ll just tell them the real story.

So much Pardon the Interruption–style golf commentary has been exhausted over the past six years about what’s going on between Tiger’s two ears. Aside from his short-lived return to form in 2012 and 2013, Woods himself has fed the typically unfounded speculation with his own—err—wishful thinking about the state of his body and his game. “I feel great. I feel really, really good. It’s great to be back out here competing again,” Woods said as recently as last December. “There should be no long-lasting effects from the surgery, and it should not impact the longevity of his career,” Woods’ representatives said in April 2014, following the golfer’s (first) microdiscectomy. It’s hard to count how many times Woods has said he was just a few “reps” away from returning to peak form when he clearly wasn’t, or how often he’s declared himself to be in ace bodily shape when he was weeks away from another surgery.

Now the spin machine has stopped, and Woods has forthrightly provided the answers to the commonly asked questions. This is a personable, likable Woods, digging into his soul and sharing what he finds. Talking about his kids and how happy he is not playing golf.

And isn’t that just so depressing? I mean, good for him and all that. But an honest Tiger is a finished Tiger, and to golf fans at least, that’s not at all fun to think about. Tiger may have been lying all those times when he said his body was fine, his mental state was fine, and his newest swing was some concrete number of practice hours away from perfection. It was that lying that kept him motivated and kept us hoping. As long as Tiger was lying to golf fans, golf fans could still avoid the unpleasant truth. Now, by introducing golf fans to his vulnerabilities, Tiger has introduced us to ours: This is it, isn’t it?""

We'll have to dust off this thread now and ignore all the previous stories about him being finished. It appears he has a few good years left in him. Good for golf to see him back. Pete

Tiger Woods seals first win in five years with Tour Championship
AFP

ATLANTA: Tiger Woods scored his first victory in more than five years on Sunday, completing a two-shot win at the Tour Championship to crown a fairy tale comeback after a near two-year absence.

The 42-year-old, 14-time major winner carded a one-over-par 71 at Atlanta's East Lake Golf Course to claim the 80th title of his glittering career.

Woods, who finished with an 11-under-par aggregate 269, raised his arms in delight after the victory, with several thousand fans ringing the green roaring appreciation.

Woods admitted he had nearly been overcome with emotion as he walked up the 18th fairway.

"I was having a hard time not crying coming up the last hole," Woods said.

"I kept saying 'Hey, I could still play this out of bounds.' But once I got the ball on the green I gave (caddie) Joey (LaCava) a high five because I knew it was done."

It was an emotional finale to a year which saw Woods return to the highest level after he had once feared he may never play golf again.

"It was just a grind out there," Woods said of his final round. "I loved every bit of it. The fight, the grind, the tough conditions.

"Beginning of the year (winning) was a tall order. But as the year progressed I found my swing and put the pieces together and I knew I could do it."

The victory erased any last lingering doubts about Woods' ability to compete at the highest level, something he had served notice of with top 10 finishes at the British Open and US PGA Championships.

Woods, who returned in January after missing almost the entire previous two years with a debilitating back injury, held a three-shot advantage heading into the final round.

A birdie on his opening hole extended Woods' lead to four shots to give the former world number one a dream start.

With the remainder of the 30-man field struggling to make any inroads, Woods then played solid if unspectacular golf to keep a stranglehold on the lead.

A bogey on the 10th was a mere blip, with Woods re-establishing a five-shot cushion at 13 under after rolling in a 13-foot birdie putt on the par-four 13th.

Billy Horschel closed the gap to four shots after after a four-under-par final round 66, but Woods looked to be in control.

Woods, however, gave his army of fans roaring him on a scare though when back-to-back bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes cut his lead to two with two to play.

But he steadied the ship with a par on the 17th and then closed out the win with a par on 18.

The victory was Woods's first since his win at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August 2013.

Meanwhile England's Olympic champion Justin Rose ensured he walks off with the FedEx Cup playoff title after finishing on six under for a share of fourth.

This proves that he is a top rank player again --it doesn't prove that he is the old "Who is going to finish second?" Tiger of old.

Mea culpa, mea culpa -- I have been as vocal as anybody saying--he is finished, he was great but he is history, yesterdays man. Then this week at Augusta and esp on Sunday he came back with an explosion--14 years after his last Masters victory he outlasted a great field to win again.

Tigers career far from over :)

Post by JW »

I think we witnessed one of the best performances in the history of golf this weekend by Mr Woods at the Masters. A very different man to the young guy we talked about in the early parts of this thread when he was basically a kid. It was easy to see how he has changed his game and thought process from pure blasting every shot to shaping and flighting his shots into the correct parts of the greens. Off the tee he hit mostly soft cut shots to control the distance and flight giving himself the best distance for his iron game to work. It was shot making of the highest level. He has become a much better man through his problems, I was never a big Tiger fan, but he's turned me. Huge respect to what he has achieved and I would like to see him get close to Big Jacks major record..not sure if I would like to see anyone better it :). Seeing him with his kids and family was just a perfect finish.

Tiger Woods wins 82nd PGA Tour title to equal record

https://www.bbc.com/sport/golf/50203246

Tiger Woods equalled the PGA Tour record of 82 tournament wins with a three-stroke Zozo Championship victory.

The 43-year-old world number 10 had seven holes to finish in Japan on Monday as he matched fellow American Sam Snead's record, set in 1965.

It was his first event since having his fifth knee operation nine weeks ago.

In April, Woods won his first major for 11 years with victory at the Masters, leaving him three short of Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 major titles.

Snead was aged 52 when he won for the final time on the PGA Tour, while Nicklaus was 46 when he lifted the last of his major trophies.

After his record-equalling victory, Woods said: "The body can't do what it used to but I can still think my way around the golf course.

"I know how to play and I was able to do that this week. There was a time if I didn't know if I would play again so I am very appreciative."

After his latest triumph at Augusta, Woods, who has also had four back surgeries, missed the cut at the PGA Championship and Open.

He did not qualify for the Tour Championship finale, which he won the year before to reach 80 PGA wins and end a five-year spell without a PGA title, so chose to have arthroscopic surgery to repair minor cartilage damage in his left knee.

The first official PGA Tour event in Japan was completed on Monday morning at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Chiba, after more than six inches of rain fell in a typhoon and Friday's second round was postponed.

Woods played 29 holes on Sunday as the tournament attempted to make up for the weather delays.

At 6.30am local time in Monday morning sunshine, he resumed his final round with a three-shot lead over Japan's Hideki Matsuyama.

He dropped a shot at his first hole of the day after finding a greenside bunker, but rolled in a 10 foot putt to birdie the par five 14th and finished with a three-under round of 67 and a 19-under total.

His first PGA title came 23 years ago this month at the Las Vegas Invitational, in a play-off against Davis Love III.

Woods leads US Presidents Cup fightback to crush Els dream

https://www.bangkokpost.com/world/18165 ... -els-dream

MELBOURNE - Tiger Woods' United States produced a stunning turnaround to deny the Internationals a first Presidents Cup in 21 years Sunday, dominating the singles on a tense final day that went to the wire at Royal Melbourne.

Veteran Matt Kuchar was the hero, with his winning putt on the 17th in the penultimate match enough to ensure victory, sparking wild celebrations from playing-captain Woods, who set the tone by getting the first point on the board.

It was a crushing loss for Ernie Els' young Internationals who led for the first three days of the biennial matchplay event.

They went into Sunday's 12 singles matches with a 10-8 lead but Patrick Reed and Dustin Johnson were among those racing to big early leads as the scoreboard became swathed in US red.

Webb Simpson beat South Korea's An Byeong-hun to guarantee the US a share of the Cup at 15-12 with three matches still in play.

Australian Cameron Smith grabbed a point by beating Justin Thomas, ensuring a nailbiting finale with Kuchar's birdie to go one-up on 17 enough to secure at least half a point and ensure there was no way back for Els' team.

"I trusted all my 11 guys. I trusted them implicitly. I told them from the very get go. They went out there and got the points we needed. We fought," said Woods.

"Even the points we lost, we were making them earn every one of them, and this Cup wasn't going to be given to us. We had to go earn it, and we did."

No side before had rallied to win on the last day after trailing for three days, further cementing the reputation of Woods, who went undefeated in his three matches.

US President Donald Trump, an avid golf fan, immediately paid tribute on social media.

"Congratulations to Tiger and the entire U.S. Team on a great comeback and tremendous WIN. True Champions!" he tweeted.

The playing-captain, in his ninth Presidents Cup, took the responsibility of going out first in the singles and won 3 and 2 against battling Mexican Abraham Ancer.

In doing so he passed Phil Mickelson to become the most successful Presidents Cup golfer in history with a 27-15-1 win-loss-tie record to his countryman's 26-16-13.

- 'We came damn close' -

"I could have made different choices in the singles today. I can take it on my shoulders," said Els.

"The questions will come that I made mistakes in the selection of where I put my players, but I followed a plan 100 percent, and it didn't quite work out. But we came damn close."

At one stage the Americans were ahead in nine matches, and world number five Dustin Johnson ensured a second point, crushing Li Haotong 4 and 3.

It ended a difficult Presidents Cup for the first Chinese player to take part -- Li was overlooked for the opening two days and never looked at ease.

Patrick Reed's caddie was banned after shoving a fan on Saturday as tensions boiled over following the controversial American's penalty for improving his lie in the Bahamas last week.

The former Masters champion turned to his swing coach to carry his bag and raced to six-up through seven holes against Taiwan's CT Pan in front of taunting fans before closing out a 4 and 2 win.

The US were on a roll and Tony Finau came from four down after 10 holes to snatch a half point on the final green against a stunned Hideki Matsuyama of Japan.

South Korea's Im Sung-jae was a bright spot. Only 21, the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year comfortably beat US Open champion Gary Woodland 4 and 3.

It was the United States' 11th victory in 13 editions of the event. One was drawn with the lone International win coming in 1998, also at Royal Melbourne.

Hardly a "difficult" road to drive, no other cars involved...... Wrong I know, but you have to think back to "previous" (i.e DUI - perhaps not alcohol, but pain killers et. al). Police have apparently said he would not be charged regarding this issue, but also stated he wasn't tested.....

Incredibly talented guy, but very troubled over the years beit self inflicted or otherwise - sad to see. Certainly can't see him coming back again....

I'm sure there's going to be many, but some comments that put me to my way of thinking/earlier post and also others that conflict with the CNN report posted: -

"Woods, the 15-time major champion, was driving a Genesis SUV courtesy vehicle by himself and is believed to have been traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash, authorities said. There were no skid marks or other indications of braking, Villanueva added."

Well........?

"Villanueva said that section of road is "downhill on a curve," and he and Gonzalez said the area is known as a trouble spot for speeding and accidents. The road has seen 13 accidents since last January." - CNN

Can't find the comparison in "script", but BBC News video/TV certainly suggested otherwise.

"Gonzalez described Woods as calm but potentially in shock. He determined there was no evidence of impairment, so drug recognition experts did not respond to the scene or hospital." - CNN

"Tiger Woods didn't realize severity of his injuries after rollover crash, deputy says. The deputy said Woods was unable to stand on his own and appeared to be unaware of "how gravely injured he was," citing a "mixture of adrenaline and shock."" - Numerous (NBC, SKY, Independent)

Certainly in the UK, but my understanding would be that a blood sample would be taken (if breath not possible/reasonable) in this type of accident in the US.

Again, not trying to be "sensacional" - just have my doubts (and concerns)...
