Has any team in history gone from the Premier League championship one year to relegation the next? You know who I'm referring to, and I think they're on the brink of entering the bottom three. Pete

Yes, the mighty Sheiks,
Manchester City’s first ever league title in the first division came in the 1936/37 season. What made the victory even sweeter was the fact that their arch-rivals Manchester United were relegated after finishing second to last in the table after 42 games. Although City started the season with a loss to Middlesbrough, they lost only 7 games that season and ended with a strong run of 22 games without defeat which included 15 wins. Four players reached double figures for goals in the league – forwards Peter Doherty (30), Eric Brook (20), Alec Herd and Fred Tilson (15 goals each).City’s home form was identical to second-placed Charlton Athletic (15 wins and 5 draws – 2 points per win), but their away record was marginally better and they took the title home with a 3-point lead after 42 matches in spite of an abandoned game midway through the season. But the very next season, their weak defence saw them lose 20 out of the 42 games as they finished in 21st place, above West Bromwich Albion only on goal difference. Surprisingly, they were the team that scored the most goals that season but still couldn’t survive the drop. City had the second-worst defensive record, conceding 77 goals in the season. Even teams above them who had a negative goal difference managed to score more points.

Just watching the Arsenal game and it's got to be said - they have been poor.

Very lucky to get away with their opener, with Sanchez slapping the ball into the net with his hand and had they been playing a team with any sort of realistic goal threat, I think they would have been wiped out.

Be interesting to see how they get on for the rest of the season, especially if Clattenburg is not on the park!

That gives the dubious distinction of it happening about twice a century then if it indeed happens this season. Oh my, oh my. Pete

Sic transit gloria mundi. Sad, so sad but shows what the world has come to, not only in football but very much in football. No feelings of loyalty around any more. Time for Chinese football to start to prosper?

Unbelievable really, although, Ferguson made his own decision to leave

last five champs of EPL

2011–12 Manchester City
2012–13 Manchester United
2013–14 Manchester City
2014–15 Chelsea
2015–16 Leicester City

and their managers:

Mancini gone
Ferguson gone
Pellegrini gone
Mourinho gone
Ranieri gone

I can smell a greedy, save face driven Thai behind all of this. No doubt about it. King Power think they walk on water. :( Pete

EDIT: Do they really think the team will rally around this decision and play with joy and determination for a new manager? They are insane if they think so.

I think the 'loyalty' ticket works both ways these days. Many managers happy to walk off to a new higher paid job at the drop of a hat as well.

Mourinho left Chelsea and regained his sanity. Many problems of his own making there.

At least one of the Italian language sports papers had the headline "Ungrateful English" concerning the sacking of Raniere. Boy, they really got that wrong as should read "Ungrateful Thais". I don't think anyone English had anything to do with the decision. Pete

I think the Leicester players have to take there share of the blame for the clubs current demise. Many of them have looked as if they couldn't care less in recent weeks.Ranieri was a nice guy who seemed unable to stop their slide.Apparently the chairman asked several of the players for their views on Ranieri after the Sevilla defeat and his fate was sealed......not nice.
On the other side of the coin,if Leicester were to get relegated it would cost the club millions of pounds in lost revenue.

Ranieri has been very dignified about his departure.....a class act....a pity the same cannot be said about some of the clubs so called stars !

Newcastle really leads a charmed life, in a way. Unless the floor falls out from under them, they'll be coming back into the Premiere League next season. Is this the second or third time they've been down and up in the last 10-12 years? They must hold the modern record for this process. Pete

EDIT: Fulham has a slim chance as well. They need another Dempsey. Fulham was stupid to transfer him to the Spurs and if they hadn't and signed him to a new 3 year contract, they never would have been relegated....IMO.

These clubs sacked their managers, Arsenal will not sack Wenger, he may not have his contract renewed, that is a different matter

Liverpool have collapsed like a house of cards. At the rate they're going, they will finish behind both ManU and Everton.

From a possible 15 points from their last 5 games, this is how the top teams have fared:

1. Chelsea 11
2. Spuds 8
3. City 10
4. Arsenal 9
5 Scousers 4
6 ManU 9
7 Everton 11
