Re: Leaving a bar
They should just legalise the whole think. That way the could make sure the women have a licence so will have sexual health education and be more aware of the hazards/problems. Plus the government could tax them and provide health checks. It's a win - win situation for me.

OK great - more regulation solves everything - NOT...They should just legalise the whole think. Thailand is chock full of laws that no-one observes - they even have laws that repeat previous ones - don't go there - more laws mean more police bribes..
Most ex-pats go to Thailand because they are sick to their back teeth with nanny-state political correctness - Thailand does a lot of things in a crazy way, but only an idiot tries to preach to them on how do to it better.
Take the LoS as you find it - if you don't enjoy, move on..

I agree with you Uncle Tom - more legislation would just mean more laws to ignore or more tea money. But there's also a huge cultural issue in all of this which comes down to just one thing IMO. Do bar girls think of themselves as prostitutes?
I don't think they do - and I hate to hear farang men calling them that. HH is a bit different to other places in the LOS and a lot of the girls can be quite picky. Many are working bars in the hope of finding the right farang while having a bit of fun and a fairly steady job with good mates thrown in. The social side of life is very important to Thais, and that extends to work as well.
OK - if the right farang happens to have to go home after 2 weeks they will keep their options open - who can blame them?

I don't think they do. And that doesn't just go for bar girls. There are a lot of Thai girls who see bar girls as 'just doing a job' (not all, of course! There are those that just think they're a bunch of prostitutes).margaretcarnes wrote:I agree with you Uncle Tom - more legislation would just mean more laws to ignore or more tea money. Well, regardless of how they see themselves, at the end of the day they give sex in exchange for money; which is pretty much a text book definition of the word prostitute!and I hate to hear farang men calling them that.
Re: Leaving a bar
You try telling a BG face to face that she is a prostitute and see or feel what happens. To most it's a job and a way of feeding her kid (s) and family who live in extreme poverty in Isaan.
Anyway, according to the law of the Kingdom prostitution is illegal

You can take the girl out of the bar but you can't take the bar out of the girl!

CJ
That applies to anything
You can take a lass out of Yorkshire but you can never take Yorkshire out of a lass
CJ, what part of California do you come from?

That is (for me) what makes HH so much nicer than other parts of Thailand. In most nightlife districts, the girls will suffer the wrath of the mamasan if they decline a customer.HH is a bit different to other places in the LOS and a lot of the girls can be quite picky. Many are working bars in the hope of finding the right farang while having a bit of fun and a fairly steady job with good mates thrown in.
Customers, on the other hand, need to remember that they are not going to have much fun if the girl is hating every moment of their encounter.
That the girls can say no thanks if they really don't fancy a guy, or expect a tiny bit of courtship before agreeing to be barfined, makes HH so much more pleasant and egalitarian.

Exactly Uncle T. A good mamasan will treat her girls like family and even give the OK on a farang. What a lot of farang bar owners don't see IMO is what goes on behind the scenes. How the girls chat to each other the next day for example, How they talk about their ambitions and - as Richard said - supporting their families.
Few of them I've known in HH want to make a career out of being a BG. It's a means to an end. And - (Richard will understand this) no different to 'Tower for an hour' !

Enjoying 'Retirement'....So many jobs to do, I don't know how I ever had time to work!
Re: Leaving a bar
I've just googled "Tower for an Hour" if it means what I think it means, then theres a big difference between picking up a minger in a Hull nightclub and paying a bargirl.
The bargirl is conducting a business transaction, with well known tarrifs, 1000-1500baht if in Hua Hin, while the girls in Hull also have a well known tarrif, one small doner kebab and a diet coke.

Most of me family are from Hull (not me - I'm a Southerner) and not one of them had the decency to tell me this during my teen years. I shall be having strong words with my dad soon... *dials number*while the girls in Hull also have a well known tarrif, one small doner kebab and a diet coke.
