Bye-bye Red-Bar & Tina Bar..

Post by usual suspect »

Seems these two bars at the 'lower' end of Binta are now a pile of rubble! :o
I think I'm right in saying after poor Toby's sad mess was cleared up the freehold was sold-on.
I also heard a rumour that it was Indians that bought it..?

Big question is what's gonna go up on that corner plot..???

* Tailor shop?.. :tsk:
* Family Mart?
* Hotel?
Anyone got any clues/ideas..??

Red bar will remain bar, not sure about Tina, maybe bar on one floor and tailor on the other.

That end of Binta is fast evolving into a one drink and sit for an hour golden ager area.

Not sure I agree Johnny. It WAS like that one time - Except for Phils place which was sit and have several! I tend to agree with Richard, it could be the beginning of the end for the Binta. Even if JWs' no doubt sound info is correct any new building is going to be higher, plainer, more sterile looking, and eventually the whole Soi will look the same.
I suppose that's 'progress'. People will quickly forget and tourists will love it. Personally I still think Buckskin Joes should have had a preservation order slapped on it so I guess there's just no hope for me! (Or the Binta.) :cheers:

Because the other end has evolved into one ************(1) who doesn't know how bad a DJ he is but compensates for it with volume and the neighboring bars that think cacophony is better than their customers listening to someone else's music.

I tend to sit in one of the restaurants opposite; that way the music is at just the right volume :)

Yes, the same thing happen to Khaosan Road. Twelve years ago, it was actually quite a nice street to visit. You could sit and have a beer, and see the entire world in just one road. There were all sorts of people (some not so good ones) and the place was appealing in a strange sort of way, but then it started. Slowly but surely the old places were torn down and replaced new yuppy joints. These days it's the in place to be seen if you're a wealthy young Thai, or if you want to get a glimpse of a few Thai TV stars.

In my opinion...................totally crap, and I can't see myself ever going back there again.

In Hua-Hin though, there seems to be a bit of an irony. You see these older places being torn down and replaced with new modern designs, a "upscale" venue opens, and then shuts a few months down the line because they just don't get the customers.

How does a falang crackhead get away with playing DJ anyways? Even with a work permit? Doesn't this cost a Thai crackhead a potential job? You would think a job like that would be reserved for Thais only. It's not like you need any special training or expertise that's unavailable to Thais. Just hit the yabba pipe and blow everyone's ears off.

Not sure what you have seen coming for several years Richard. On the oft referred to Binta Block, incl Poonsuk and Selakem, I have seen many shops converted to bars in the last few years. I'm no expert in the bar history but how many bars have closed and changed to other retail outlets? I know one, Lips bar which was on the periphery anyway opposite Bam Bams restaurant. A good few years ago the old Hogs Breath I think became Poonsuk Plaza which is an additional 4 or 5 bars. If you use map jack for which I think Baa Baa posted a link and walk around you will see that 3 years ago next to Suky bar was a massage parlour, it is now Stone bar. Also next to Romantic was a launderette on map jack, it is now Suky 2. Not sure what Tuk Tuk bar was before but I remember sitting in a bar watching them paint it but maybe it was a bar before anyway? Then recently the estate agent on the corner of the soi leading to JWs changed to a bar. I know many bars have changed owners and names and many bars may be struggling to make a decent living but how many have closed as opposed to the half a dozen new ones that have opened in the last few years ?

I've not been around as long as you, Mags and a few others so maybe there are changes/closures I haven't noticed, if so I apologise, just my view on walking around the last few years. :cheers:

Nobody knows. Back in 1994 there were already persistent rumours that Bintabat would disappear soon. Since then the bar scene spread out to adjacent sois and the number of bars at least quadrupled.
The temple objected so the days were numbered. Hilton took over the Melia so the days were numbered. Centara took over Sofitel so the days were numbered. A new mayor was elected and soon everything would be relocated to the other side of the canal road and so on and so on.

On the other hand this is Thailand so it could well be that one day it literally disappears overnight (see Clinton Plaza in Bangkok).

Roel

Is Clinton Plaza the set of bars and shops that got dozered one night and is now a park?

It was a set of bars and gogo's on Sukhumvit between Soi 13 and 15 about half way between Nana and Cowboy. Think there is a hotel now, but who cares.
