OK, I'm back in town after a nightmare trip with some sad news:

Prachinburi 3 - 2 Hua Hin

It will take a miricle for Hua Hin to steal Prachuab's 2nd place promotion spot (a 7-0 win should do it :D ).

Seriously, I think we should be congratulating Prachuab on gaining promotion.

I will write a quick report later, but it was an excellent match, spoilt as usual by the officials. Prachinburi were excellent value for their win, but...............................

The shop I always use is go across the crazy railway crossing on Soi 70 towards Pala-U, but don't turn right, keep on going towards Hin Lek Fire. The shop is about 200 yards on your right after the Pala-U junction. A cardboard cut-out of Shota (Hua Hin goalie) outside. Lovely people in the shop.

Unfortunately is isnt looking good for Hua Hin FC, you need to win 7-0 at home to Prachuap next week to take second spot on goal difference. Our game was a nail biter but the result is all that matters!

He says with a smile all over his face.

At the end of the day, Hua Hin were not good enough, and our leaky defence was to blame. Having said that, I'd still reckon we've got the 3 best defenders in the 2nd division. The key difference was the way Phichit cheated against Hua Hin, and they are now champions. I am not sorry that we won't be facing that bunch of cheats anytime soon. For professional sportsmen to do that to fellow professionals is simply wrong. I am usually graceful in defeat, but not to those :tosser: . IMHO they are nothing more than thugs.

Not that I believe there's a snowball's chance in hell of Hua Hin doing it next week, but the alternatives are unthinkable. If When Prachuab are promoted, there's a gap in the Div 2 Southern section. Being the most Southerly of the Northern teams, Hua Hin will almost certainly be called upon to automatically fill that gap. That means a hell of a lot of additional travel for the team and supporters. It also means the brand 'Vana Nava' Hua Hin City will not get the same publicity in the all important Bangkok arena. Will that be a problem?

The one saving grace is that they are considering consolodation of the 6 regional leagues into 4. Yes, Hua Hin would move naturally into the SW section, but so would a few Bangkok teams. We might lose the likes of Muangkan and Singburi to the NW section.

Being a Green Army supporter, I am well used to disappointment, but what's better, buying and expecting 'plastic' success like Man City, Chelsea etc - along with their numerous plastic supporters (sorry caller, not all plastic  ), or supporting your local side, just because you can? Don't forget the old saying, "Better to be winning in the second, than not winning in the First."

I've enjoyed this season, and am looking forward to next. I'll be there wishing Prachuab all of the best next Sunday :D

Oh, and for DavyB, the cheats also knobbled your mate, which is why we haven't been seeing him. He was there yesterday, but clearly in a lot of pain - looking at some of the stretches he was doing, I'd guess it is a serious back injury. Let's hope the close season sees the problem healed.

Prachinburi 3 - 2 Vana Nava Hua Hin City

I travelled to Prachinburi knowing that to be sure of competition for a promotion spot on the last day of the season, at least a point would be required. I was actually quietly confident of 3 points after the way our opposition had played at Fort Thanarat.

Well, after a marathon journey (that's for another post), we eventually arrived at the opposition's ground some 13.5 hours after departing Hua Hin. What a dump Prachinburi was!!!

By far, this was the worst professional football ground I had ever been to. The playing surface was a disgrace also. If you look at the goalmouth here, it was on 2 levels. However, it was exactly this problem that gifted Kissana Hua Hin's 2nd goal, so it was as bad for the home team as well.

About an hour before the match the local fire brigade was brought in to water the pitch.
DSC00990.jpg
DSC00993.jpg
We were actually hoping the referee, who was doing his pre-match pitch inspection at the time, might also get an early bath, but the fireman wasn't that good a shot.

Hua Hin had a support of about 50, and actually outnumbered the home fans. All things taken into consideration, I have to wonder if poor ground, poor pitch and poor support is the reason Prachinburi were (maybe deliberately) at the bottom of the Champions League. I honestly don't think Prachinburi could sustain Div 1 football.

Hua Hin were still without Anucha, who I now know is suffering from a serious injury and Yonsak. Owusu (the man who had locked the Hua Hin defence at Udon) was suspended, and took his place in the crowd with the fans. Despite this, we still fielded quite a strong side.

The match kicked off, and the normally solid Hua Hin defence were all over the place. Shota was on the left wing laying on the ground (he's our brilliant, ever dependable goalie by the way) :? , and Kanchit and Lampty were falling over each other. One minute gone, and we're a goal down - WTF

After gifting Prachinburi a one goal lead, Hua Hin settled down, and started playing some pretty football. Nutthapong's equaliser was inevitable. Hua Hin remained in control until Prachinburi took the lead again, totally against the run of play with a screaming shot from way outside of the box, which gave Shota absolutely no chance.

Hua Hin remained in contol, and just before half time a poor Kissana shot, hit the uneven goal line surface and left the Prachinburi keeper and cenre-half stranded (it might have struck the centre-half on the way in, so might be an own goal).

The second half started, and the referee must have decided it was now his turn to make the headlines. As with all Div 2 referees, the game suddenly became about him and his linesmen :? Maybe I'm doing them an injustice, and I don't understand the Thai offside rule. It seems to me, week after week that a different rule is being played. However, the International offside rule is played when it suits. This isn't sour grapes, it affects all teams, and leaves everybody except the match officials bemused.

Anyway, back to the game. It was good end to end stuff, with Hua Hin always looking most likely to score. Then it happened, Nuttapong scored a lovely headed goal. However, for some reason (I think the ball boy was offside), the referee declared offside. Prachinburi ran down the other end, and scored the winner with a very well taken header.

Hua Hin continued to press, but Prachinburi had parked the bus.

For me, and I don't say this very often, Hua Hin's man of the match was Kissana, who was a constant threat to Prachinburi,

An excellent game, spoilt by the ref. That marks the end of a great season, which I've enjoyed very much.

Next week should be party time for Prachuab. I wonder what Hua Hin's attitude will be. Will they try a few players that normally sit on the sidelines? We have nothing to lose, so why not put them into real game against decent opposition. Who knows, we may be pleasantly surprised.

Despite not being a Wendyball supporter  , I have to admit to enjoying your reports and the thread BB. Has to be great finding a (fairly decent) side to follow on a weekly basis and mix with the supporters - was something I really missed in my time in China.

Anyway, as to Hua Hin City FC - always a chance, but if worst comes to worst......... there's always next season!!

An Away Trip With Vana Nava Hua Hin City

As regular followers of this thread, many of you will know that I've been following Hua Hin at both home and away matches this season.

Following them playing in Regional Division 2 is easy, with most matches being reached in an average of 3 hours. Some are a little further, and some closer. Hua Hin encourage away support and pay for all travel and admission. They usually also include a meal and even a couple of beers.

The Champions League has been a different proposition with long distance games to places such as Phichit and Udon Thani. We went to Prachuab and BCC Tero with the club, but when arrangements for Phichit were announced, it was time for a re-think. The supporters club were leaving at 10pm, and travelling home when the match finished at about 8pm. During the day, they were going to visit Sukothai - they actually went to a crocodie farm :? . We obviously met them at the match, and they looked absolutely knackered. I couldn't face that journey, so did my own thing. 2 day time journies, and 2 nights in a hotel was much more palletable. Only downside was an 18 mile stretch of road just outside of Phichit. It must be the worst in Thailand - it makes the Bang Saphan to Hua Hin road seem like driving on silk.

The following week was Udon Thani. This time the supporters club was leaving at 10am, and due to return at 10am 2 days later, by mini buses  . It's no wonder they put the Hua Hin support in a remote corner of the ground - public health risk comes to mind :D . I decided to fly, and have another 2 nights in a hotel.

Travelled out, I decided Prachinburi would be easy (only 4.5 hours each way), so we reserved our supporters club seats. Then we were told that we were leaving at midnight Friday  . OK, I'd booked, and they assured us the trip would take in the culture of the area.

We turned up at Hua Hin Temple at 23:30 to find that we were travelling in a fleet of mini-buses. No problem, we'd done that a few times during the season. These were decent drivers.

05:30 in the morning, we're still travelling, and I notice a sign - 28 Kms to the border. Then 20Km, then 10Km. I asked Mrs BB if she knew where we were going? Cambodia. she says, things are cheap - OK, I had my passport, but no re-entry permit. 5Km, 4Km, 3Km and I'm getting ready to stop the bus. 2Km, 1Km, and the driver pulled into a car par park.

My initial relief turned into disbelief. We were at a market at the Cambodian border at 6am, and would be leaving at 11am :? I must say, it was the largest market I'd ever seen, and things were stupidly cheap. Quality football shirts 100 Baht, and I'm sure you could barter them down is just 1 example. Fake Ray Ban sunglasses 20 Baht, Big Boy real leather belts 20 Baht- I think you get the idea.

This for a non-shopping freak like me (2 minutes in a 7-11 winds me up) was an absolute nightmare. 5 hours at a market, combined with sleep deprivation - how could I do it?

Let's find something for breakfast - nothing I could stomach. There wasn't even a 7-11 for a junk food fix. I eventually found a coffee shop, and made camp there for the duration. Of course, Mrs BB was having a field day, spending money on bargains. I actually thought we'd need a bigger bus.

Well, even the Thais realised 5 hours shopping was unsustainable, and they recalled the bus drivers (yes, we had 2 per mini-bus) early at 10am. It was then a 2 hour drive to the ground, which became 3 when we got lost.

en-route to Prachinburi, the landscape was ugly. No agriculture, just marshland - IMHO the ugliest part of this country.

Prachinburi was just another Thai town, but the football ground was the worst I'd ever visited.

I don't remember much about the journey home - I had a lot of z's to dispose of. However, after this, I have vowed to be an independent traveller to the longer matches in future. My itinerary will not include shopping.

Yes, it has been fun, and the opportunity to mix with real Thais each week has been great. The sponsors provide a limited amount of beer each match for the THAI supporters, which they are always willing to share with me and a Farang friend who always travels with us. Their English is limited, but we always get by. If struggling too much, Mrs BB is always there to help.

I was actually honoured a couple of weeks ago when they asked me to exchange club scarves at Phichit. I felt that I had really been accepted as a Hua Hin supporter,

I actually returned the weekly beer gesture yesterday, as it was our last away game of the season, I bought 1,000 Bahts worth of beer to boost what the sponsor had provided - it turned out to be a huge sack of beer, and helped mellow the journey home for many  .

I have fallen in love with our football club and I am so sorry that the season has come to a shuddering halt before this champions league fiasco has come to an end. Our abysmal away form cost us dearly and heads will surely roll as a consequence of that and no doubt some of our better players will be lured away to play for an established Division 1 outfit and even quite possibly a Premier League team - so highly I rate some of our players. We gave every team that visited our ground at Pranburi a real test and that includes the bunch of cheats from Phichit. Some of these teams we should have beaten by 6 or 7, such was our dominance!! We had key injuries to players at the most important times and not forgetting the time when Lamptey was missing due to the renewal of his visa. He was out for absolutely ages. I could have walked backwards and got it sorted quicker. We have had some of the worst referees I have ever seen ANYWHERE and some decisions that still have me lost for words, yet in the end we just could not perform away from home - not even against a team that had no chance of getting promoted. It now looks like we are destined for the bowels of Division 2. Can a phoenix rise from these ashes? Where do we go from here? We will hopefully have a brand new stadium, retain some very good players that are attracting big salaries, have large sponsorship from well-known sponsors yet be playing in no-mans land.

Davy, a long shot, but 3 - 0 will see us tie for 2nd (no idea what happens then, or 4 - 0 will see us promoted. Unlikely, but you never know. Don't forget, it's our home form that has given us this remote chance.
