It is not like Christmas. The first 2 years I really made the effort, but Christmas is just another day in Thailand.

Been here 13 years and always have a great Christmas. Although the Thais are budhists, they don't scrimp on the lights and Christmas decorations. Far better than being in the UK (except the lack of snow) in that it lasts just the one day, whereas in the UK it starts around October and costs everyone a fortune.

Christmas eve parties, excellent choice of Christmas day venues.

So, sorry, I can't agree with BB.

I'm the same, I think I've been in Hua Hin for at least the last twelve years at Christmas and have always enjoyed it, I have to be there as it's my partners birthday as well! Mind you, I haven't spent a Christmas in Europe for at least twenty years apart from ones where I've been working at airports over the holiday period.

Agree, I have spent the past 3 years in Hua Hin for X-Mas, they do a great job decorating the town.. My Thai wife decorates the house and the tree trims the tree... Get the family involved in the season... Everyone seems to enjoy the week, they stay to New Years.... Overall a great time, I play golf on Xmas day too.... Works for me...

Agree with HHTel - it doesn't drag on in Thailand, but you can get Turkey and all the trimmings if you really must. I do like the way there are all the decorations - (especially in Bangkok) while life carries on as normal really with trains running and shops open.
Also HuaHin, with it's Scandinavian community, is good for Christmas Eve celebrations with great Scandi food.
A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.

Maybe it's just me then, or maybe I tried too hard to replicate what we did in the UK.

Personally, I just can't get to grips with the way everything carries on as normal. We've done both the home thing, and the going out for for Christmas Dinner etc. Neither has really floated my boat as a Christmas experience.

Don't get me wrong, I've always made the effort, and have had a nice day, but it definitely has not been a classic Christmas experience for me. A 'proper' Christmas experience is one of the few things that Thailand lacks........... for me.

I used to enjoy Christmas in the UK when my kids were young - Santa's (talc) footprints by the flagstone fireplace in the cellar, mince pie crumbs and an empty whisky glass, getting jumped on at 5 a.m., etc. etc.
If I could get my grand daughters out here, I'd make the effort. Otherwise, apart from (usually) having a traditional dinner at some point with friends, I really can't be bothered.
This is the way

I have done it at home with friends and family, which was nice. But I prefer eating out and enjoy the fact that you are not fleeced like in the UK even at the larger hotels or best eateries. The best bit is it only lasts for 1 day and is fairly relaxed, not starting in September or October like in the UK and the pressure is not there for everything to be perfect!
One day I'll hold a beach party for Christmas and see how that goes down :-)
Enjoying 'Retirement'....So many jobs to do, I don't know how I ever had time to work!

Isn’t celebrating a myth’s birthday gone out of style yet?

All my Christmases have always been merry and bright in Hua Hin. Just make sure you get yourself to a good venue for xmas dinner. An added bonus is having plenty of family around.

I'm not a very religious person really, but must admit that xmas is my favourite time of year and the time of year that I get a little homesick. Everyone seems to be in a good mood, there's good food and drink a plenty and, if you're a big kid like me, there's presents.

What's not to like?

You don't sound like a very jolly person Deep Blue - probably on Santa's naughty list I suspect.

The only thing I can remember about Christmas in the UK was that everything was closed, including the pubs! Basically it was a family thing and not much fun if you didn't have one, or didn't get on or whatever.
